Selling a vehicle without a title in hand?

We have an 03 Acura RS-X that we need to sell. Its paid off and it has a title, but we don't have it. From what I've researched we would have to go to the tax collectors office to get a print out. I've never sold a vehicle before are you able to sell a vehicle without title in hand and just do a title transfer? Or what would be the best and easiest course of action to help us get this thing sold?

Update:

Oh we are also the original owners of this vehicle.

Your local DMV can help you get a print of title holder.

If the car is payed off the bank or lien holder should have sent you the title. Yes go down to the place you payed the car off to get your title you will likely have to go to the DMV for them to print you out a title.

You need the title to get any money out of it, people don't like buying cars without the title because you can't register one without it and it might be stolen. So they have to take a risk and deal with a really slow and irritating legal process.

No person in their right mind would even consider buying your car without the title on hand.
