Do we need to set up network to use a wireless printer?

We want to buy a wireless printer, but I just read this statement concerning the printer we like: "Wireless printing requires a working network with wireless 802.11b/g or n capability." We have no idea what this means. I've tried to do research online, but everything I found uses technical languge that makes my head spin.

We have two laptops which are not networked to each other and both are on Verizon DSL. Does Verizon DSL include the required network?. I thought a network is a system that allows all computer in a business to be connected so that they all can access the same files, etc. Does the word "network" in the wireless context have a different meaning?

If we need to set up a network, what is the simplest, easiest and least expensive way to do that? Thanks for your responses.

It does not sound like any of these answerers understand ur question.

I hear 2 computers separately connected to the internet via Verizon air cards (3g/4g whatever)

as such that is not a wifi network.

u can create one with a wireless router. ur printer will connect to the router and ur PCs will connect to the printer via their wireless connection to the router. once u connect the printer to the wireless router u will add a network printer - u may have to disconnect the air card during this process so it won't get confused.

all independent of the internet connection.

You need a wireless router, both computers will have to connect to the wireless router. Most come with a setup disk that will make it a little simpler. When you have them connected, you will need to go into windows 7 control panel and click on the network icon and enable file and print and enable network settings. Now the printer will also have a setup disk that you can use to connect to your WIRELESS network.

If you are accessing the internet without plugging in an ethernet cable on ANY computer in the house, then the printer will work with ALL computers in the house (assuming you arnt leaching your neighbors wireless)

otherwise you need a wireless router, one with an antenna---you can get one that supports g (faster) from a thrift store these days for like $10

if both laptops are connected to the box they gave you for internet, then they are "networked" to the same router. you will need to set the printer up for the network using the included software disc, in order to make it ready for your network. sometimes this involves connecting it via USB first, in order to load the WIRELESS settings, but often, nicer printers will search for your printer automatically (wirelessly), and connect to it DIRECTLY (wirelessly) in "ad-hoc" mode to send the data, then return it to "infrastructure" mode when it is done. HP printers typically do this.

it all depends on how they have it set up. you should check the manual, but to do this, you may need your network info, such as your router's SSID, any password needed, and what type of network you have (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.). all of this can be found by logging into the router...
