Worth it to take a Medical Billing and Coding course?

I have a business degree, but haven't been able to find a full time job. At my local community college, they are offering a course in Medical Billing and Coding. After completing the course, I have to sit for the National Healthcareers Association's Certified Billing and Coding Specialist exam. The course is only 3 months long. I'm good with numbers and computers, but i think when it comes to basic anatomy and physiology as well as basic medical terminology, I'm gonna have to put in a lot of study time. Reading up on it, the pay doesn't seem great, but probably has a better chance of landing a job. Any thoughts?

First off, with anything that is new, it is difficult at first. You learn the basics that are the building blocks to the more advanced. You will not be expected to know everything right away (however, a 3 month program is pretty fast!)

Secondly, I don't know what school you are attending, but I would suggest NOT sitting for the CBCS certification, employers do not recognize it, and it will be a waste of your time. I would suggest ONLY sitting for certications that are through either AAPC or AHIMA. they are the only nationally recognized coding organizations.

Thirdly, pay. Pay varies a few different things, such as location, size of the employer and your experience. But generally, most entry level coders (who have 1-2 years of coding experience) start out around $13-15 an hour, once you gain more experience, the pay goes up to around $16-20 an hour and increases with more experience and credentials, to around $25-35.

So the pay is pretty good, but, this field has become oversaturated quickly. Everyone who was laid off has been drawn to healthcare for its stability and especially to coding because of the high pay and short programs. It can be difficult to find that first job, but if you start out doing something entry level, such as account follow up, charge entry, insurance verification, etc. Something to get your foot in the door and gain experience, you can move up to a coding job. Once you have experience, there are plenty of jobs available (there is actually a shortage of experienced coders), but its getting that experience that can be difficult.

This really is a great field. I love my job and the flexibility of being able to work from home.
