High pitched whistling sound coming from a/c compressor clutch?
98 chevy malibu 3.1 liter v6 102k miles on it. The whistling seems more prevalent when rpm is below 1500. When i took belt off and turned by hand it made noise. Also, could compressor be bypassed with a non a/c belt?

Sounds like the bearing in the clutch. You would not need to replace the compressor or even drain the system to replace the bearing. You would have to go to a auto parts store to find out if that model came without A/C and if it did you may need to replace the compressor with a idler pulley which would put the expense over the replacement bearing.
