Both. Maya means which is unintelligible. What we see is not real and what is real is not seen by us. Its like a garland. There are different flowers stringed in one thread. We are happy to see various colors but we never realize that they are all stringed by a thread. The thread remains unnoticed and not of our interest.
Chaya means shadow. We can call this world a shadow of a supreme power.

The tower of Babel. Words, words, and more words signifying nothing! All a healer does is to point the client in the right direction so he/she can heal himself/herself. Well MAYBE when it comes to setting broken bones some intervention is called for and MAYBE also in the case where the patient is not likely to head your advice, then interventions are also ok. All that thanks to the self-serving medical field which has brainwashed the great majority in believing that THEY are the only ones who can heal anyone. Barbarism to the nth degree! Compassion does not mean ignoring. Becoming the suffering of others is even worse as it only multiplies the pain. Anything taken to extremes becomes its own opposite. Furthermore all it takes to promote error when it comes to translated scriptures is for languages to all die at the same time. Pick up a dictionary from a mere century ago and you can have great fun in seeing how much the definition of words IN THE SAME LANGUAGE has changed. It is incredible. Now when it comes to only two languages involved in translation, the differences are exponential. After three or four translations centuries apart there is next to no chance that the story even resembles what was meant. Then, taken out of context, there is absolutely not one iota of a chance that the spirit of the scripture can be understood. Here Maya is the atheist girl next door and she is Mexican. Go figure! Rather than use a questionable quote, it is best to use one's own verifications or even common sense if there is any available. No offense! This is simply my excited opinion. Cheers! PS-now that I read the other answers, "See what I meant?"

Maya...
There is no place where Chaya where exists. according to my thought its because
1) God create everything which is control by him then why he create such place?
2) chaya refer as dark which means lack of knowledge. knowledge means god and god is everywhere... so maya is in chaya ...then how this world b remain chaya.
3)whenever chaya dominated god takes birth and give divine knowledge.
