Are gift cards to tattoo studios shady?

I feel like if i used gift cards to the studio, i would in some way be cheating the artist who is dedicating his time to me. I would absolutely tip him graciously, but still a friend is planning on getting me a hefty gift card to a studio this christmas.

Should i put aside this fear? or do tattoo artists feel like their time really is wasted in this situation?

No, they're not. A lot of studios do this to promote business when business is slow. The artist still gets his share of the take. Most studios pay 40/60 percent, 40% going to the artist, a few pay 50/50, right down the middle. Don't worry about the discount. It just means more customers.

The artist is making the same amount of money from a gift card as cash...and if you tip then there's nothing really shady about it.

Your friend is BUYing the card so you won't really be ripping him off. :) just make sure to tip.
