when you first start all they really are is scraps of metal, how do you, say, put an operating system on there

When you usually are installing a new OS, say Windows, it will tell you what to do when you turn the computer on, but if the computer hasnt been programmed, how do you do it?

Thanks!

Your motherboard is programmed ahead of time with bios and your bios detect your components and will allows you to boot up an operating system installation disc. After you get your operating system installed your motherboard will have a disc which you can need to use to install your drivers.

You can buy a system builders operating disc online for about 100 dollars. Just search oem and the operating system you want. Self built systems aren't that much different than already built ones, they just lack the operating system. Sometimes you may have to enter your bios by pressing DLT after turning on your computer. From there you select your disc drive in boot priority. Your bios are stored on your motherboard not your hard drive and it is not detectable from windows.

Bios is preloaded you can reinstall it the same way you install your OS by using a disc or flash memory device, if it doesn't work your motherboard will need to be sent back. Newer motherboards can roll back after a failed bios installation.
