  • Jobs for Computer Science degree holders?

I am planning on getting a tech related job after college once i finish my CS degree. However, I don't want to be sitting 9-5 Mon-Fri coding, sitting at a desk. I like coding and all, its just I couldn't be a programmer or developer as a job. I was thinking about something like a Database Admin, Network Admin, IT manager, pentester, etc. I like the business side of IT as well, using cool technologies in the workplace. I was also thinking about getting a minor in business or even a MBA after my bachelors. I would think that a degree like Information Technology or MIS or CIS would be better suited for the work I want to do, however the salary potential is MUCH higher with a CS degree and more options will be available for me. Also, I've read that most IT Managers hold a more advanced degree like CS compared to IT, CIS, or MIS. Just to clarify, I am a Senior in High school and wondering what path I should take. Which degree should I go for? I am worried that once I get into Jr/Sr years of college (at Ohio State) that all recruiters and internships will be just for programming and coding jobs. I hope this is not the case. Any tips from people in the industry? Thanks!

  • Computer Science or Information Technology?

Hey all, I'm currently in high school and like many are trying to find out what I want to do with my life... So, I'm caught between an Information Tech major or a Computer Science major. I realize the difference between the two, CS is more math based and coding, etc, IT is more practical application and working with devices hands on. I really do not enjoy coding that much, and I am not the best at math, Calc was my lowest grade this past year. So I figured that IT would be right for me, I want to be a network admin, security specialist/pentester, IT manager, systems analyst, something related to that. However when I looked at the requirements for these jobs, most asked for a CS degree, not an IT degree. I don't understand this, the IT curriculum seems more related to most of these jobs, whereas CS seems more fit for programming/development jobs. While reading online I read this: "CS majors can do IT and CS jobs, whereas IT majors can do IT jobs BUT not CS jobs"...would you agree? Is the CS degree really worth it when considering my aversion to math? I will take the CS route if it makes a huge salary difference but I'd prefer not to. Maybe a major in IT and minor in CS? I have an A+ and Net+ cert already so I just need a degree to supplement...I just want to make the right choice. Thank you so much for taking your time to read this and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Best linux/android set top box?

I am thinking maybe raspberry pi? or an ODROID? Im looking to set up my TV with a set top box. I have a media server and am going to stream movies and TV to this box. I was thinking of using raspBMC to do this which seems absolutely perfect! However my problem arrives when it comes to music. RaspBMC can play music, however with my collection it is not very user friendly (40000+). So for music i was going to use Volumio (formerly raspyfi). But i cannot use both Volumio and RaspBMC at the same time, and dual booting i do not want to do. Soooo, essentially what I am looking for is a box/OS that can show my movies and TV metadata and information (like XBMC) BUT also display my music in a user friendly way, such as Volumio's UI or something like simple iTunes interface. Also, when playing music I want to be able to turn off my TV and play music from my stereo (headless) and control the playback from my iphone or a computer. There are just so many options and I want to know what OS/box to use. OH and also, the box i want to be able to control via a keyboard or mouse and not a remote. If Volumio and RaspBMC could be combined that would be excellent. But if my needs can be satisfied via raspbian or some other box/OS just let me know. Ideas? Thanks!

  • Trade school and then college?

Currently I am a 16 year old sophomore, and like many, are wondering about their futures regarding college and such. I am interested in Computers/Information Technology. My high school has a partnership with a trade school, Butler Tech (http://www.butlertech.org/programs/teen_ed_it_tech... and I am wondering if it would be better to go to Butler Tech AND then college, as opposed to my high school now and then college. I would still be getting the same degree either way, however Butler Tech I would obviously have more prior knowledge for my associates/bachelors. Butler Tech has partnerships with many colleges in the area, some are just community colleges such as : Sinclair and Southern State Community.

The "actual" colleges are:Cincinnati State, Miami University, University of Cincinnati, Wright State, University of Dayton, and Shawnee State. What I am concerned with is that future employers will not be likely to hire me because of community colleges or sub-par colleges...

Now what I am asking is, is if I stayed at my original high school and applied at colleges for a Computer Science major, or I went to Butler Tech and applied for a Computer Science major, which school would colleges want to accept more? Logic tells me to believe that a student at Butler Tech would be more likely to be accepted (experience, etc), however many people I have talked to say that people that go to trade school "aren't the type of people that go to college".

I must mention that through Butler Tech, the school will pay for certain computer certifications as well (CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, etc)

I have pretty good grades, a 3.9 GPA. So, which path should I take? Thanks!

  • Connecting non-wireless printer to network?

I have a HP Laserjet 8150n for my small business and I am looking to be able to print from all 4 of our computers. We do not have a wireless connection or router, 1 computer is connected straight to our modem through an ethernet cord, and the other 3 computers are connected to a switch with an ethernet cord, which is connected to the modem. Now is there a way that I can connect our new printer to either a computer or the switch, so that ALL the computers will be able to print from it? Connecting the printer straight to the modem is not an option, if that matters. All computers are running windows 7. If it matters the printer also has a parallel port. Thank you for your time and assistance!

  • How do computer repairmen activate windows?

Ok, I'm curious, but to all computer repair people out there i have a question. If someone brings you in a computer that is completely messed up, the OS is corrupted or virus filled or registry corrupted or what have you, and your only choice is to wipe the drive, after you do this how do you re install windows for the customer? is the customer forced to buy a whole another windows installation, or do you pirate it or something? Thank you!

  • Requirements for my home server?

Hello all, lately i have been looking into servers and home automation and media servers and stuff like that, and ive been wanting to set up one of my own for my home personal use. However the computer i am thinking about setting up the server on is a little bit old, i don't have the specifics at the moment but i think a 1.6 ghz dual processor with 512 mb of ram (possibly 1 gb). So i was wondering if it is possible to do all of the following tasks on this computer, if not all of the tasks then maybe just a select few. Here is what i want to do:

    VPN/FTP/FTPS/SSH server

    Home file server

Computer backup (not really important, i have 2 laptops on my network as well)

Home Automation (not important, however if it can be done thats great)

Media Server for streaming to my laptops and TVs...using Roku for my TVs (very important for me)

Managing an Active Directory for my laptops for a learning experience

    DVR/PVR for TV

Downloading Torrents to server from laptops

I realize this is a large task load for such a mediocre computer, however these are just the ideas that i would like to try and if its possible for me to not go buy another fancy computer that would be great. I will be using a couple 2 TB harddrives for these tasks so space is not a problem.

So, is this possible? Thank you in advance for all help!

My main concern is the media server, as i believe this will most likely be the most intensive...but if i can do any of these please let me know which ones i can and cannot do based on the limits of my computer. Thanks!

  • How do I start programming?

I am 15, and my school has a robotics competition (called FRC). You have to create the robot and also program it. You can use C or C++ or LabVIEW or Java. I would like to use Java as it has been recommended to me a lot. Now, I have absolutely NO EXPERIENCE at all with any programming language, period. I am thoroughly educated with computers in general though.

So, considering i have no experience, where do I start learning?

Where do I download the JRE and all of that stuff? Some good books? Tutorials for beginners?

Sorry for my overwhelming description, but I have no clue where to start.

    Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!!!

  • What gaming computer is right for me?

I want a new laptop computer, preferably under $800. I usually just browse around on the internet, watch videos, listen to music(A LOT), edit music, simple stuff like that. But I also play 2 low-graphic games. They are called CrossFire (http://crossfire.z8games.com/downloadS2.aspx) and Combat Arms

(http://combatarms.nexon.net/Support/GameClient.asp... I want to get decent or high fps on both games. So, considering everything I do on the computer, what do you think will be the best laptop for me? Under $800 please...but will go higher if needed...

  • Gamefly Vs Blockbuster?

I have just gotten a PS3 and looking for some games. The popular thing to do is get Gamefly and rent the games. But blockbuster is much cheaper per month. I understand that most new releases arent available to rent for about 6 months after they are released. But I dont care. I dont need it right when its released, and im fine with playing older games that were released years ago (ex. Prototype rather than the new game, Prototype 2). So, what do you think I should get, based on my preferences? Or you can recommend another rental service if you think it's better.

    Thank You.

  • How to start investing as a teenager?

I am 14 years old and I want to start investing into something. My parents said just pick what you want and they'd go along with it. I don't know where to start. There are stocks, bonds, CDs, etc. Can you recommend anything? I only have about $250 and it should be short term, say under 3 or 4 years. So, considering my situation, what fund will be best suited for me?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Good young adult sci fi series?

OK. Most of the series I like have a main character that's about 10-20 years old, and the series has a lot to do with technology/computers. Also, the characters are usually smart and have a lot of power. It doesn't matter if they don't fulfill all of these requirements, but it has to be a SERIES, and not just books. Not books, SERIES.

Some of the books that I loved are:

    Artemis Fowl Series

    H.I.V.E. Series

    Evil Genius Series

Enders Game ( I just finished it last night, was pretty awesome)

These two don't really fit in with the other books, but I liked 'em too:

    All books by Anthony Horowitz

    Margaret Peterson Haddix books

    Any Recommendations?

Oh, and none of that wizard, dragon, hocus pocus type of stuff. (like Eragon)

Harry Potter was great, but it's one of a kind.

    Thanks in advance. :)

I asked this question before and most people recommended these, which I have already read, but hated: The Hunger Games Series (not really a big fan, but was ok)

    Maximum Ride

    The Golden Compass (hated it)

  • Good movies from the past decade?

No drama, horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or musicals.

They have to be from around the past decade (about 1995-now).

I love action/adventure type movies, like Taken, Rush Hour, Inception, Fast and Furious series, and also Comedy movies, like ones with Adam Sandler and Mall Cop. Oh yes, and survival movies are great.

    Thanks in advance.

  • I want to buy a ps3 but im not sure?

I want to get the 20gb 1st generation because its backwards compatible with the ps2 and it's cheaper(i don't care about the "slim" and all the new features). Then I'm going to get a new hard drive with like 500gb of memory and replace it with the original. is that the cheapest way? also will i be able to get the updates(firmware i think its called) with a 1st generation model? thanks!
