Would you find it offensive if....?

My family is having their traditional Christmas get together, however this year 5 or 6 of the 15 of us gathering said they could not afford the $5, gift for our traditional Yankee gift exchange, so all of us agreed not to do it.

But in keeping with the spirit of giving I decided to give each person a $1 scratch ticket in a custom made card. Just so some sort of gift is given. But my mom said that I should not do it because the family members who said they couldn't afford to give a gift might be offended. I don't see how getting a gift could cause or be taken as an offense.

So my question is; would you be offended, if after declining to buy a gift for the gathering, a family member gave you a gift?

Update:

OK 1: A "Yankee gift swap" is a game, the gifts are inexpensive, cheesy and most of the time a gift from last year that no one wanted then either. But that's what makes it fun.

2: I'm a giver, I would do the ticket thing anyway.

3: $1 apiece is all I can afford for gifts.

4: Nanci I'm 34 and there is no pride involved. I'm just trying to see how many would find it offensive.

She means because it makes them feel bad for not being able to give. Some people are like that but not all people are offended at that. I like getting things like that because it says that someone thought of me.

It does seem a bit offensive because you know they are having money problems and it seems like by giving them a scratch ticket you are saying "Here take this! Maybe you will win some money or something". It's a really delicate situation..maybe try getting them something else?

If members of a family cannot manage five bucks, perhaps they'd better forget about the get together and just stay home

  • Maybe just give them a card, I wouldn't be offended by that.

if it's no than no...listen to your mother...she understands the dynamics of the family better than you do. there is a pride issue here you sound too young to understand
