Throttle body needs replacing......?

My car wasn't cranking over, took it to dealership said my throttle body needs replaced along with cleaning my fuel injectors and changing my spark plugs. Wanting 1400 dollars to fix it, never heard of a throttle body needing replaced. Someone shed some light on this please.....

Update:

2004 Ford Explorer, It wont start, mechanic said engine wont crank over due to things mentioned above, but I was told none of those things should cause car not to start

Help us out here a little, what vehicle and engine are we talking about, how many miles? Generally speaking about the only part of a throttle body that would normally wear out might be the throttle plate pivots but unless there's a lot miles involved that's doubtful. Most cases of throttle body problems can be solved with a thorough cleaning, along with the injectors. Unless its been damaged I'd opt for the cleaning versus replacement.

Question: What happens when you step on the gas?

Answer: There's a flap called the "throttle body" that is on the intake of the engine, where air goes in to be consumed. When you step on the gas, the throttle body opens up wider, and lets more air in. The engine runs faster.

This throttle body is then a critical component.

EDIT: Don't listen to the above guy. 90% of cars on the road have a throttle body, fuel injectors, and spark plugs. Exceptions would be diesel cars, or very old cars (older than 80s) which would have a carburetor.

To the headache pill guy above, Where did he say anything about a carburettor?

Throttle bodies rarely wear out. You most likely have a bad IAC (Idle Air Control) valve which mounts on the TB.

$1400.00 is a ridiculous price to pay, but if you go to a dealership, pull out the wallet!

They are LYING to you to get your $$$$> Your throttle body will last for 300,000 miles without replacement if you IGNORE it. You DO have a DIRTY THROTTLE BODY and IAC valve, which is akin to the throttle body. On FORD engines, this fella' is easily removed for cleaning with an 8mm socket. Use GUMOUT and SEAFOAM to do this YOURSELF> FORGE the crap they told you, and get that car out of there. Send ME THE MONEY instead!!! Also, once cleaned out, stick with MOBIL ONE 0w-30 and change it once a year. It is the VAPORS given off from wax based engine oils like Valvoline and others that CAUSES this problem. THe MOBIL ONE will protect your engine sensors, and keep your lifters and other engine assemblies CLEAN and FREE OF SLUDGE!!! HINT: Install a set of BOSCH Fusion spark plugs to get the most from every piston stroke GOOD LUCK!!

what makes the dealer think it,s the throttle body ? i mean other things can cause it not to start also. it could be the fuel pump, the pump relay, the fuel filter or the fuel regulator on the fuel rail. the gas has to go through the regulator before getting to the injectors. i had several cars and i never once had to change the throttle body.

You don't mention make, model, and year. Throttle body failure is very uncommon in most cars, but the VW Jetta (and possibly other VW models) have trouble with it. See the first source.
