Is anybody eating black eyed peas today for good luck?

I know its an African American tradition, but I was wondering if anyone else eats black eyed peas too on New Years.

Unfortunately, I'm not because my mom waited until the last minute to shop for some and thier were absolutely none. We went to Marsh, Kroger, AND Walmart. All of it was gone. : (

It's a soul food and a southern one, too. When I taught in Oklahoma I was educated on the New Year's dish of black eyed peas and hog jowls. One of the best meal ever! It's got to have the hog jowls, too. Corn bread and then apple pie for desert. Home snug and happy!

    It's called Hopping John

It's origins aren't so much African but American slave soul food culture.

My MIL from OK eats it on New Years day without fail.

I've made it using smoked ham or a hog jowl with chopped green pepper and onions sprinkled with a lot of hot sauce.
