... when it occurred to me that some guy posted a tongue twister and landed close to three thousand thumbs ups.

    Because it was chosen as 'Featured Content'.

    Meaning, EVERYONE who signed into the site saw it, plenty of them LOOKED at it, and LOTS of them gave it a thumbs up.

    Just a matter of being in the right place at the right time to be noticed ... NOT a reflection on the quality of the answer!

    Once it gets posted as featured content, people want to get associated with it, thus the thumbs
