What kind of "vegetarian"? There are about a bazillion different kinds these days: strict vegetarian, ovo lacto vegetarian, vegan, freegan, seagan, beegan, flexitarian, pescetarian, etc. If you eat fish or seafood (pescetarian or seagan), they're a good source of B12. If you eat eggs and dairy products (ovo lacto), those contain B12. But one chicken egg only provides 6% of the B12 RDA. So you'll need to eat a lot of them to get the B12 you need.
B12 is found naturally in only animal products. Plants don't need b12; they don't make it. Animals do need b12, they make it for themselves, humans can get it when they eat their meat/eggs or drink their milk and eat other dairy products (yogurt, cheese, etc.)
The Vegan Society, the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG), VeganHealth, theveganRD and every responsible veg*n online group tell vegans and some vegetarians to supplement, supplement their diet for B12. They can take B12 pills, get shots or eat manufactured B12 that's been added to highly processed foods.
From VeganHealth: "...Contrary to rumors, there are no reliable, unfortified plant sources of vitamin B12, including tempeh, seaweeds, and organic produce. The overwhelming consensus in the mainstream nutrition community, as well as among vegan health professionals, is that plant foods are not a reliable source of vitamin B12, and fortified foods or supplements are necessary for the optimal health of vegans, and even vegetarians in many cases..."
