My toilet bowl keeps slowly filling up. What's going on?
Here are the details:
I live in a mobile home.
This problem is happening without even flushing.
I'm in NY so it's 14 degrees outside.
My bathtub is connected to the same drainage pipe and it seems I can continuously run the bath water without the bathtub or toilet backing up.
Does anyone know what my problem(s) is(are), and how I could fix it?
Thank you!
We don't have a septic tank
Also, the water filling it is clean water. Looks like it's coming from the tank.
My dear son wrote the above. Tonight, I started his washing machine while he was working on the problem (I'm not a good assistant). Water runs fine in all faucets. After using an auger which released no debris, having insulated under the home in the summer and installing heat tapes, I believe the cause of the problem is that the heat tapes aren't plugged in and THERE MUST BE ICE IN THE DRAIN PIPE.The washing machine on rinse cycle partially backs up into the bathtub at the other end of the home, where this toilet is located.
Thanks Addie, Corky Donald, Jean Ann and others for your time and input. You're all correct. In this case, it's definitely an ice jam. A large section of the mobile home skirting had been removed and not replaced after a repair, exposing the drain pipe. My son hasn't had the time to locate the "marked" heat tape plug yet. LOL

If, by filling up, you mean there's water flowing in to it continuosly, but not overflowing the rim, then the flapper ball in the tank needs to be replaced. You should be able to see a ripple effect somewhere around the bowl, where the edge of the water level meets the side of the bowl. That little ripple is water draining from the tank into the bowl from under the flapper, where it's not seating properly when it drops down. If the toilet flushes normally and seemingly refills properly, then that's the problem. The flapper is very easy to replace. Buy a new one, and don't scrimp on this thing, a good quality flapper will cost in the $7 - $9 range, but will last much longer than the cheaper units. It will normally have two small hinges, one on each side at the bottom, plus a chain attached to the middle. Once you have the thing home, simply shut off the water and flush the toilet if you'd prefer not to work under water, or if you don't mind that, just reach down on the center post and undo the two hinges by simply bending the rubber and flipping each off the peg on the side of the post. Then take it out of the water and undo the chain. Measure the old chain from the flapper top connection, attach the new chain to the flush handle at approx. the same distance, then put the actual flapper down in to the water and hook up the two hinges on the side posts. You should be good to go at this point. Let the water fill back up in the tank and it shouldn't leak anymore, which should stop the bowl from filling.

After the lid has been taken off the commode tank you can see the parts. The handle you push down to flush is connected to a plastic line or a chain.
The chain or plastic line is connected to a stopper or flapper that holds the water in the tank.
When the handle is pushed down the little chain or plastic line lifts the stopper up and the water goes out the drain hole into the commode.
The stopper might be worn out and is not holding the water in.
Or the plastic line or chain might be off the stopper.
There is a float that goes down when the water drains out. When the water runs back in the tank, the float goes back up. There might be something wrong with the float.
It is usually the stopper or the plastic line when the water drains out of the tank and fills back up again.
Source(s): I have put the plastic line back on the stopper a lot of times or reached down and got it out from under the stopper and hooked it back on. My husband put a new stopper in our tank not long ago. - Comp-ElectLv 79 years ago
Corky R has the best answer.
Before buying any parts for the toilette get some food colouring and pour it in the tank on the back of the toilette.
Do not flush the Toilette. Check the Toilette bowl ; if the water starts to turn the colour of the food colouring, then follow Corky R's answer.

Are you in a residence in the country and have a septic system, or do you live in an apartment? I have had the problem you mentioned before. I had to remove the toliet (buy a replacement wax ring), and take a power snake to clear the clog which was about 20 feet down the drain. It was in my septic system. I then replaced the wax seal on the toliet and fastened it to the floor. I would not use draino or bleach, they will compound the problem, and make the water dangerous to deal with if someone has to get in it. You can rent a power snake at most hardware places for about 30 - 40 bucks for 8 hours. Goodluck!

could be septic tank
or you have a small clog
use a plunger and have someone cover the other drain while you plunge
