If you're a pharmacist, please answer this question: Why do you want to be a pharmacist?
Why do you want to be a pharmacist?
This is a question that I'm sure will be asked in my interview. I have an answer that involves "helping people and the world" and the typical, but to me that sounds really fake and it sounds everyone else will answer that question, so it won't make me stand out in the interview. What would you say in your interview if you were asked this question?

1. It is good if you intend on having a family; it is the type of job that you can choose how many hours you want in a week, and should you choose, you can have several years off and come back and find a job/ regain your job relatively easily. Even though drugs are constantly changing, the industry itself does not have many changes. This is a big factor why many people choose Pharmacy.
2. There is a business aspect, unlike many other medical professions. As it is a retail environment (in Drug Stores/ Chemists, that is - not in hospital pharmacies/ clinical environments), you have opportunity to be making as much money as you want, depending on your business skills.
3. Again, as it is a retail environment, you get a lot more interaction with people, and you meet different people every day.
4. You establish yourself in the community. Working in a pharmacy, you have regular customers, and for years and years you can see their medical and health progress. If you are a good pharmacist, many people know you by name and you can establish very good relationships with people.
5. The pharmaceutical industry is and always has been corrupt, and even though you would only be playing a small part, it is nice to know that you will be keeping your community free from corruption and providing excellent and safe service to everyone. This is the reason why my Pharmacy Manager has chosen Pharmacy. He has caught many corrupt doctors, drug dealers etc. by doing his job well!
6. Pharmacists are often the first place people go for illness, before seeing a doctor. You can influence their views and decisions on their health before anyone else.
7. There are many opportunities to go above and beyond in the industry. My pharmacy offers diabetic, paediatric, alcoholism/ drug abuse clinics and many more. My Pharmacy Manager regularly gives presentations to people offering free advice. It makes you feel like you're really making a difference, rather than just pumping out scripts.
