Is it possible to be Christian without being religious?

Say you just followed his/His philosophies and ignored all the God stuff (which, granted, would be tricky). Are you still a Christian, even though you're non-religious? Kind of like how Calvinists don't necessarily worship Calvin? Or does 'Christian' as a word mean 'believer in Christ's divinity'?

Update:

Well, I'm not religious by any means but Christ says a lot of stuff in the Bible that I can get behind. Not all of it, but he (if he existed in any way) seems to be based on a guy who had some pretty groovy ideas before "groovy" was used to express such ideas.

Update 2:

Please don't make the mistake of thinking I'm looking for a religion. It's more a question of semantics. I'm an atheist. Have been for some time.

Update 3:

I don't want to be anything!! This isn't about me, it's about the word. I don't need Christ, Nietzche, Kierkegaard, Socrates, Plato, Hitchens, Dawkins or ANYBODY to tell me how to live my life.

er... You want to be a "Christian" but you don't believe in Christ's divinity? That's kind if a major feature of Christianity.

    James wrote:

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

So no, according to the Christian text, you cannot legitimately be non-religious and a Christian.

  • Some people claim to be, but that is plain stupid. The ONLY reason they even know about Christianity is because of the RELIGION called Christianity. Only a deist can make such a claim and even they get the God idea from religion.

The term in greek is " religio" and it basically refers to being taken into bondage.

Christ said "You will know the truth will set you free."

Based on that .......Christianity is not the same thing as religion.

It would probably be the difference between a person who drives the vehicle they own and does basic routine maintenance on it and is content VS....A person who's "religious " about it.

Pretty much what you mean is just be a good person but ignore all the other bullshit. Thats not Christianity, thats called BEING A GOOD PERSON.

Sure Jesus taught some great stuff, pretty much the same stuff as every other philosopher, be kind, be polite, be trustworthy, be loyal, all that stuff.

Not really. That would just be esoteric Christianity if anything. But you are better off going with a spiritual system that doesn't require so much tweaking to fit your world view. One that actually agrees with you probably exists already.

    Not really.

Christ preached for his Father, (God ) and for the Kingdom of Heaven. to take either or both out of the equation, would be Jesus then preaching for nothing.

To believe in Christ, one has to believe what Jesus believed in, thus..."Christian".

Jesus was the Christ...not Jesus Christ. "The Christ " is the "anointed one"....

So Jesus was "the anointed one", and was known as Jesus, the Christ.

To believe in Jesus the Christ, one must then also believe in God and in Heaven, for that was the whole purpose of Jesus's preachings.

  • Salvation is made through confession of sin and believing on the Lord Jesus: that He died for your sins and God raised Him from the dead.

It's a relationship, not a religion. Sorry, but you can't cherry pick it bro.

Christianity is a religion. To be a Christian, you must be religious.
