What are your suggestions and thoughts for a new .22 rifle?

I am looking for a new (not used) inexpensive plinker. The local wal-mart has a Savage Mark II ($127), Mossberg Plinker ($109), Savage Model 64 ($117), Marlin Model 60 ($139), Ruger 10/22 ($187) and Henry H001 ($256). I am leaning toward the Mark II as it has a reputation for accuracy, feels better to hold and mount, and has a better front sight than the Plinker (similar to the M64) or the Model 60, at the lower end of the price range and is a bolt action. What are the communities experiences with any of those mentioned? I am looking at Wal-Mart (this one still sells firearms) just because of the price (lower than one else in the area). I don't want to consider used because I have had two bad purchases (jam-o-matics)) with used .22 rifles.

Savage rifles are excellent value for the money. I have a Savage 12 BVSS in .308. My best group was just over half an inch at 100 yards. I can do about 3" at 400 yards.

The bolt action will be the most reliable and the simplest to maintain. Some of the Savage's have the accutrigger, which can be user adjusted with a allen key from 2-4lbs

I have a Ruger M77/22 bolt action in .22lr. It has the rotary magazine. I have never cleaned the magazine since new over 15 years ago. It has never jammed.

The Ruger might be one you want to consider. You can't go wrong with Savage either.

If the Savage Mark II fits you the best then buy it.

  • The Savage 64 and Marlin 60 are very accurate out of the box. The Marlin 60 has a last shot hold-open, which is really good, although I don't like the tube fed mag.. The Savage has the longest bbl and it is also free-floated. The trigger on the Savage is a little bit spongy. Both will accept optics on 3/8" dovetail which is integral to the receiver, i.e., no add'l mounts are needed.

The 10/22 has one fantastic advantage in my opinion: hi-cap magazines and speed loaders. This is a pretty big deal because loading 22 gets old after a while.

I own both a 10/22 and a 64F. If I needed to make a shot for $100 I'd use the Savage. For a fun day at the range and as a training rifle the 10/22 is hard to beat.

First, why you have had bad luck with used .22's. The .22 is typically built for the low end market. Anyone that's ever purchased a gun knows the difference in price between a 10/22 and an over/under custom 12 gauge trap gun. So along with being constructed from the get go from lower quality parts, they're also one of the cheapest guns to shoot. Thus, most used .22's you get will have had literally tens of thousands of rounds put through it. You can get a used .22 with no problem, just remember that all you need to do is change out the recoil spring, the gun shop won't do it unless they're paid to do it. They'll inspect it to make sure it's safe and relatively clean, but they don't replace parts unless they have to. So just figure that as an extra $6 part of the purchase of a used .22. With a new recoil spring, you'll find that most used .22's shoot like the day you bought them, barring any odd component failures.

As far as what I recommend rifle wise, I'm a fan of both the Mod 60 and the 10/22. The 10/22 might have a bit more support from the mod community (lots of aftermarket parts available for the 10/22), but there are Mod 60 parts out there too. The others may be good guns, but in the .22 world, if you want to upgrade it, the 10/22 and Mod 60 are the only real choices.

I think that anyone who wants a rifle should always own a .22 rifle. While I have no desire to buy another semi-auto .22lr rifle, I would like a bolt action model. I have looked around in my local walmart at their selection. I was leaning towards the Mark II F they have there at $137, but this specific Mark II F is not an accutrigger model. I have played with a Savage accutrigger demo at a local gun store and let me tell you, It's one sweet trigger that is easy to adjust to different pull weights. When i'm ready to buy, I will check walmart's catalog and see if they do have a Mark II F with accutrigger in their catalog, then price compare.

Your thinking is right. For serious shooters, a good bolt action is the way to go.Unless you can afford an an Anschutz,a CZ 452 -or 455 are the best bet. These sre rifles that will last, and grow in value..

  • Look, I love savage rifles. I own a model 110, its a great gun. That is not the point. The point is, there is no gun in the world that has more customizable options than the 10/22.

They are very accurate. They are very easy to maintain. You can actually convert your 10/22 into a tommy gun if you wanted to. I'm serious google it.

Parts for 10/22's are a dime a dozen. It is a cheaper gun to own in the long run.

Either the Savage or the Marlin are the best choices.

The most popular rifle on your list is the Ruger 10/22........ It is a semi-auto of course but these are hugely popular and are reliable........
