Some cats hate to be held. My cat never liked it. And cats are like divas, you can only hold them when they wish to be held.

Make a slight clicking sound with your tongue, and rub your fingers together. {Like you would when symboling money.} Say there name in a sweet voice, and shake a bag of treats. When they come towards you, don't pick them up. Stroke the top of their head and make your way down their back. When you get to the bottom of their back, they'll most likely stick up their butt and begin to purr. Then, GENTLY pick them up from under their arms and then rock them like a baby, cooing and scratching their heads. Hope this works! (:

Cats are very independent animals, and most are not the 'hug me whenever you like' type, (though some are). I recommend you get a puppy. Cats will simply not allow you to hold them if they don't feel like it.
