Does your 3 year old spell their names?

Today my daughter, Emilee, spelled her first name. I used to work in for a daycare, and never seen a 3 year old spell anything. Does anyone else have a child that spelled at such a young age?

she has simply been worked with...

she may have just rote learned the spelling verses real knowledge

you could check knowledge...by giving her letter cards..3x5 cards cut in half..write a lower case letter on each card...mix them up and hand the stack to her all letters up...let her lay them out..you touch othing...say those are the letters of your name...show me your name......let her move around the cards...to get to the right point...if she does this on her own with no language or help from you she knows her name in written form...

now does she know these letters alone...like where they fit in the ABC...most likely not...

both concepts are unnecessary...for that age group...in 25 plus years...i have seen maybe 2 kids that knew their name and how to spell it...but they were short names...ot letter names...

as a child development specialist i would ask...other things of your child...

    like self help skills...uses bathroom..washes hands..without being told...feeds self..drinks from a cup...seperartes from parents...socializes with children her age...plays alone and with others..cleans up after self...follows simple rules is helpful...uses language with a purpose..enjoys books...and being read to...

as you know the younger years we want child to feel self assured and knowledgeable about the skills they have verses concept of knowledge....those become important later

but mommy...great job...that is amazing...and beyond the call of mommy duty... :).

Yes, my child could spell and write his name at 2.5 yrs old on paper and on computer with keyboard, as well as his phone number. I think 2.5 to 3.5 years old is normal but all depends on the childs interest in letters and numbers and the parents efforts to get them interested in a fun way. My child was very interested in letters and numbers so that helped. At 3.5 years old he can now count to 100, write a few words, cat, dog, hat, name, phone etc, he can read a little level 1 reading books and he can write upper and lowercase alphabet.

We used a 'rock n learn' dvd's, at age 2 he would watch about 15 mins a day of it and he loved the music type learning of these programs. Also we used the vtech electronic learning games for writing letters and numbers, he loved those too.

Yes, I do. My 4 yr old son was recognizing his name at age 2.5, and spelling it by age 3.

My 2 yr old son currently doesn't recognize his name, but we are working!

I don't remember the exact age but around this age they learned to spell their names. Plus their siblings names.

Yes, it's common for a bright 3 year old with a relatively simple name to be able to write it.

Well my son - Jacob-James can spell his name and he is 3. But that is only because we call him Jj, so he wrote 'Jj'.

His twin, Riley, spells his name wrong. He spells it (in very messy handwriting): Ryly.
