Agnosticism vs. Atheism?

I'm agnostic.

If you're atheist, why? If you're agnostic, why?

Update:

For the record, I consider myself a Reform Jew. Thoughts?

I am an atheist. I firmly say there is no god. An "agnostic atheist" is an agnostic leaning strongly toward atheism. They are not there yet. Despite what some Catholic apologists and agnostic philosophers (and people on the internet) have tried to create with these terms. Atheist means "without god".

"Gnostic" is a term that has always applied to religion/god until very recently (within recent decades) and it should be done away with with regard to atheism. It is like using the term "gospel" as in "atheists believe it is the gospel that there is no god". (gospel means undeniable truth) The usage of "agnostic" and "gnostic" has always applied to a religious belief and to apply it to a godless belief is just silly.

Catholic apologists originally created this "gnostic atheist" and "agnostic atheist" nonsense in an effort to equate atheism with a religion. It was later picked up by some agnostic philosophers who applied it to atheism. In recent years (decades) it has been used philosophically to debate a level of agnosticism, not atheism. When the level of agnosticism became so weak that it bordered on atheism, the term "agnostic atheist" was used. These terms should be rejected by atheists because it weakens the atheist argument, by saying it "can't be known" whether or not God exists. Can't be known = "possible". If anyone believes that it is possible for a god to exist, they are not an atheist. Because atheist simply means "without god".

Acceptance of a supernatural claim tends to promote cooperative social relationships. This communication demonstrates a willingness to accept, without skepticism, the influence of the speaker in a way similar to a child's acceptance of the influence of a parent. By encouraging this kind of behavior where the most intense social relationships occur it facilitates the lack of skepticism and deters more open minded thinking.

They are christian, Muslim or the other religions depending where they were born simply because they were indoctrinated by their parents as very young children. They will go on to indoctrinate their own children and those will go on to indoctrinate their grandchildren!

Atheists have the intellect to see through the conditioning and escape into the real world!

Agnostics have the intellect to see through the conditioning but lack the courage to throw of the conditioning entirely.

Sadly Christians, muslims and others are still held firmly prisoner by the self perpetuating brainwashing!

I'm a Christian because I know there's a higher power and Jesus makes the most sense.

If I wasn't Christian, I would absolutely be agnostic. There's no way we could exist. The world went from... nothing... to something? That blows apart every single rule of science (matter doesnt change) and math (0x0=0) we know.

(FYI if you're Jewish you believe in the Hebrew God. You cannot be both agnostic and Jewish. You, however could be "culturally Jewish.")

I considered Agnosticism for a while, I then came to the conclusion that I didn't like being "neutral", I don't believe in any deities so therefore I am an Atheist, it's that simple.

  • I am an atheist because I don't believe that there is some "higher power". I believe in Science and Free-Thought. In the words of Ayn Rand: "My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." My purpose in life is not to serve some unseen, magical creature who is apparently omniscient and omnipotent but does nothing to help anybody, which goes for really all religions. But, to each his own, I guess.

Agnostic means no knowledge of God.

Atheist means no belief in God.

You can be an agnostic theist, a gnostic theist, an agnostic atheist, or a gnostic atheist.

Most self-described agnostics are actually agnostic atheists.

Agnosticism means you believe you can't know for certain whether any gods exist. Atheism means you don't believe that any gods exist. Most Christians seem to be agnostics.

They're not mutually exclusive. I'm an agnostic atheist. I don't believe in any deities but I don't rule them out 100% of existing.

Agnostic almost atheist. why? because I suddenly realized religion isolates humans and creates group unity in very limited units that seem to shun others who don't agree with their system. No matter which religion that is.
