Fellow Seniors (and everyone else): Have you ever heard of Yahoo doing anything as insane and abusive as this?
Several days ago I was catching up on reading all the Best Answer notices I'd received in recent weeks--several dozen of them--and also some emails from other Seniors. (Thanks to all for the kind words. For MishMash: I buy and sell old houses for a living.)
And suddenly I no longer had access to my mail. Except for two items. An email telling me I'd been REPORTED for something I'd said a couple of weeks ago. And an email SENT ONE MINUTE LATER telling me that I was now prohibited from accessing my mail or any of my other content on Yahoo or any of its affiliates (Flickr, Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Connect, My Yahoo, etc.).
As a TOP CONTRIBUTOR who has never been reported for anything in the approximately one year that I have had the account, I was bewildered, to say the least.
The answer that was reported was to a rather silly question. "How old are the seniors?" (I'm paraphrasing.) Most of the answers were also silly, including mine. "I'm eight and a half," I said, "but I look older." Pretty funny, I thought. Surely nobody would be offended by such harmless and lighthearted comedy.
So after setting up another email account on another web portal, I was finally able to ask for an explanation from Yahoo, and after several days received a message from "D.K. Stans" (no location, title, or gender), refusing to answer my questions and only saying that Yahoo's decision would NEVER be reversed. (Then I received a "Customer Satisfaction" form asking me to describe how "pleased" I was with D.K. Stans' "service.")
Yahoo has a rule that says nobody can actually BE a young child and participate in Yahoo Answers. When you sign up for Yahoo Answers, you legally stipulate that you are not a child. But fortunately, there is NO RULE allowing Yahoo to penalize anyone for making a JOKE about being a child--or a dog or a pig or a cartoon character, for that matter.
I guess I don't mind so much that Yahoo has destroyed a year's worth of my work and the nearly ten thousand points I earned during that time. I GUESS that's a PERFECTLY REASONABLE consequence for making one humorous remark per year. But I think it's an outrage that they have summarily seized or perhaps even irrevocably destroyed (though I doubt that) all of MY information.
For those who agree that no internet company should be allowed to do this, I urge you to send a message to "D.K. Stans" at Yahoo Customer Care. For everyone's sake, not mine. (The case number is 89610983, and my screen name, as Seniors will remember, was "As long as you're up, get me a Grant's.")
You might want to point out to Ms. or Mr. Stans that Yahoo's competitor, Google, has a well-known motto: "Don't Do Evil." Maybe That's one reason that Google is such a terrific success and Yahoo is always mired in technical, ethical, and financial problems.
I'm also interested in hearing from any lawyers who think this might have the makings of a test-case to find out whether an internet behemoth like Yahoo--which maintains one of the world's largest "data warehouses" with over two quadrillion bytes of Information about us--can ultimately get away with such capricious and tyrannical behavior.
In any case, best wishes to the Seniors. I will miss you all--even those of you whose opinions sometimes gave me a headache.
LATER DETAILS:
Dr. Snark: Somebody always says "settle down." And it's often the first person who answers. Fortunately, most people don't pay that advice any mind.
graponmytired: Good joke! But watch out. YAHOO will torture and execute you if they think you're trying to be funny! This is a SERIOUS place, you know! Shape up or DIE!
Number Six: That is over my head.
StellaMk2, and Lily: Thanks.
Ooops: As I indicated, I have lost intellectual property, which is of REAL VALUE. (Though in my particular case some might disagree.) Unlike "points," which are lost in an ordinary "suspension." There is a big difference between a Yahoo Answers account being SUSPENDED and an entire Yahoo I.D. being DISABLED across the board, which you may have failed to understand. As for the law, courts often find that contracts do not necessarily stand up simply because a much weaker party says "I agree." And MIGHT should never make RIGHT simply because th
(PROBLEM WITH ADDING DETAILS. Is this working now? Let's see.)
TYPICAL YAHOO SCREW-UPl Let's try again: From "...agree."
agree. And MIGHT should never make RIGHT simply because the details are approved by the legal department.
Glenda" That's a good philosophy. I will take it under consideration.
Goddess of Laundry: Thanks.
solo surprise: I don't believe anyone could honestly mistake me for an eight year old. And besides, my joke was not really about children anyway. It was abut the way that we feel as we age, which is a completely appropriate observation to make in a forum about Seniors. And in any case, the question is moot because I legally averred that I am an adult, thus relieving Yahoo of any responsibility for my possible delinquency or moral turpitude.
truth!, Thomas, and Marilyn: Thanks.
Leroy: I am sorry that I ever differed with you. I like your thinking. (And thanks for the star!)
(TESTING: ARE THESE "DETAILS" STILL POSTING? Let's see.)
OK then. From "...Leroy"
Blink: I AM a liberal, though NOT an Obamacrat. (He's not liberal ENOUGH for me, if you can imagine that.) But I think your remarks make a lot of sense.
Roe: I know exactly what you mean. And I am against censorship whether it comes from the Right or the Left.
neiliam2: I haven't seen any obscenity on this site. (Though I wouldn't mind it.)
mrwizard: I remember that. I said that Thomas was "probably a fifteen year old girl." Another joke. But I'm not sure of your meaning. If Thomas really were fifteen, that would make him the criminal here, not me.
janet, Oh snap, and Whortleberry: Thanks.

Hi Grants,I wondered what had happened to you.
Sounds like you've cheesed somebody off somewhere.
How infuriating still as Snarky above me suggests keep on appealing and hopefully you'll be reinstated in your old Avatar and regain your standing.
Still you've managed to reinvent yourself of sorts so maybe you'll stick with us in your new guise, hope so.

I too was turned in for a Politically incorrect answer. Why? because i happened to name songs, that were from WW2. and to say they were PC was a mild assessment. However these songs did exist , I did not make they names up and the songs were played in most American households.l back then. Its like they want to re-write history. You can't do that. you can only report what happens/ or happened.
i know that you are Liberal, maybe you are getting a taste of what will happen if obama gets his way and gets control of the internet. Do you think for one moment that you would be able to write about Political issues and voice your opinion. ( It would all depend on which party was in office at the time.) If it were Liberals then probably no Republican would ever be nominated again, since not one word could be said against them. I am sure the Liberals would love that , BUT what if a conservative was in office at that time, and they had complete control. all of a sudden it would be wrong ( according to the Liberals) so you see censorship is bad , no matter who is in office.
I like to answer your questions even though most of the time I don't agree with you. By the way , are you an American Citizen and if not why are you a Democrat?

I got a message once that stated... "gulp you're account has been suspended," and didn't know why. But tried again about a week later and it was back.
During that time I did some checking about Yahoo because of the other forums I've had problems with and media comment sections. Yahoo like others are based in very liberal (not so liberal), fascist, California where freedoms aren't respected that much, and being a media giant can do whatever they want, to whomever they want. In my searching and questioning it seem Yahoo like others, are pretty bad about moderation and censorship and political correctness, and there are many complaints on the web about them.
There, like elsewhere, are trolls and those who turn you in for the smallest disagreement or infraction. Being babyish. Then we have the paid trolls and activist, yes paid, to run/scour the web and do their best at agitating people they don't like or might not support their own agendas, or want to see others silenced or booted off a forum I live in a college town with multiple colleges and today's college groups and activist seem to hate freedom of speech and expression, and really hate us "townies" and old folks with a passion. They don't want anyone to dare challenge their agendas, propaganda, or whims on how to run our own lives or town. They know it all and want no debate about it. Local forums have totally been shut-down because of too much truth being discussed and too much reality being posted that local news and others don't want to be made public. Of course they all say this censorship, moderation, and safe-guards like age appropriateness is because of stupid women's groups and commies that demand we all be policed and lose our freedoms for something called security or safety. That way they don't have to be good parents either and can spend their time at the mall or on a jet going somewhere while the kiddies are at home. Oh gee we must protect all the little kiddies. We even have to build a fence on our own property to surround a pool so they won't walk over and drown too easily. Like that does any good but the femi-Nazis and police state got their way for selfish stupidity. This country has gone to hell in hand-basket and so has our freedoms of speech on and off the net. Totally controlled and censored and getting worse.

Unfortunately there is absolutely no legal case you can bring nor is there anything else you can do. The reason being that when we joined we clicked i agree. Of course none of us read what we agreed to which was yahoo having the right to do just about anything they liked. One thing I have learned in my several years on here is that the least infringement can incur the wrath of enough users to get you reported Yahoo then on appeal stick to the absolute letter of the law which of course results in your problem. The rules are you must answer the question, not joke therefore it is a violation and they are correct. It's sad but that's the ruling. I have learned not to fall foul of this but none of us are really safe. You say you have been here a year and will miss the others. Fine , don't go what the heck points are pointless so what have you really lost.

The people who make these decisions are usually sitting in their living room in India or Taiwan. They don't speak English well enough to recognize humor in our answers. They also interpret Yahoo Answers Community Guidelines very literally.
My advice is to forget about it. I've been around since 2006, and I've seen that it's usually just not worth the trouble to try and get reinstated. As far as a lawyer is concerned, Yahoo owns the site and allows us to use it. They can make their own rules. After all, you're not paying them anything, are you?

I have been wondering where you were, as I always, always enjoy your answers even if sometimes you are a little - well, let's just say blunt. I can only imagine how frustrated you must feel in dealing with the nameless monster that is Yahoo. My gut feeling is that someone who doesn't like you seized upon an opportunity to report you and probably did it using multiple accounts. I would be happy to do as you request as it simply is not fair. I have suffered my share of deleted questions for silly reasons (though not for a while, knock on wood). It probably won't do any good, but I'll give it the old college try.

I'm not a lawyer yet (will be in two months), but I can tell you this: once you accept an end-user agreement (which includes terms such as letting Yahoo do pretty much whatever it wants), you are bound by it. I know, contracts of adhesion suck, but they're enforceable nonetheless.

yahoo answers takes everything so seriously.
they wouldn't want a child sneak in and sign up (i had to wait for like 2 years to make my account with out paying) you HAVE to be at least 13 and they thought you were serious about saying that you were "8 & 1/2"

I had the same thing happen about 4 years ago. I see their methods haven't changed any. Your problem started with a troll reporting you for whatever their idea of what abuse was. Sometimes appeals work but most times not. I was reported for chatting and since it was about my 10th violation and technically they were correct, I just said the hell with it. Then a strange thing happened. I switched my ips from Comcast to ATT DSL and discovered ATT's home page was powered by Yahoo. The little line at the top said "Make Yahoo your home page" so,just to see what would happen, I did and I was back in but I'd lost all my points (big deal) and had to establish a new profile(same as before) with a new user ID(different from before). I was still smarting from being bounced before so I didn't make much use of it until this past year. I've only received one violation since coming back and I think that's because Yahoo lightened up on chatting rules. If they haven't then both you and I are in deep trouble again. Keep posting under your new name, it hasn't changed that much and the useless points will mount up again. But something has to be done about people here in this category encouraging the trolls to keep coming back by catering to them. You were one that critisized me for getting on their case so now you see how easy it can backfire on you. I hold no grudge but I hate to see this category eaten up by trolls as it was years ago when people tolerated them.

Oh, for the love of God, settle down.
It's not uncommon for users to get their accounts suspended for ridiculous reasons. This is because the system is operated by computers, not actual human beings. You just need to be persistent and keep appealing your decision until you reach an actual human. This usually happens by about the third appeal.
