Dog euthanized unfairly?

I picked up a stray about 2 1/2-3 weeks ago, searched for his owner in multiple ways and never heard anything in return, i had him scanned for a chip and still nothing.

He was a very sweet and energetic Pit maybe about 1-2 years old.

I was unable to locate a home for him and was unfortunately able to keep him due to my my 3 year old daughter coming over for the weekend (I didn't know how he was towards children and didn't want to take any risks).

I was forced to do what i never wanted to do and that was to take him to a shelter in order to try to get him adopted or as a place for him to stay temporarily.

The day i brought him to the shelter (Thursday) I talked to several people and they all understood and agreed that if anything was to happen, if he was unable to be adopted or if someone seemed fit enough to adopt him, they would call me. I was willing to pay all adoption fees for the right person to give him a new home. If he wasn't adopted out, they knew i was going to come back and pay the adoption fees to get him back out. Like i said....they agreed and promised me that he would not be euthanized and they would call me if anything happened....

Today (Monday) I went back, I asked to see Crash (The Pit i had brought in) and the guy at the desk told me he wasn't there, when i asked where he was he wouldn't even look me in the eyes/ in my direction as he told me they had euthanized him. I asked him why and he said he was aggressive towards the other animals, I for one do not believe this.... I have 2 other dogs that he wanted nothing more than to play with, he never tried once to hurt them. One of my dogs was aggressive towards him and anytime she got that way with him, he would back off. I talked to another employee that happened to be there the day i brought him in and she had no idea he had been euthanized and she herself said that she didn't see any aggression in him towards the other animals.

The same guy that said he was aggressive also told me that the day after he was brought in the shelter was over crowded. I'm thinking breed discrimination because i noticed while i was in the shelter, there was only a small handful of the many pits that were in there the day i brought Crash in, I looked on their website when i got back home at the list of adopted animals and only 1 of the many other pits had been adopted out.

I'm wanting to do something about this but i don't know exactly how to go about it or what exactly i should do....Any suggestions?

Update:

Unfortunately i trusted them by word of mouth, though it was on his paperwork that i was willing to pay adoption fees or to pay to adopt him back as my own.

I'm not wanting to go after the shelter, i know that it wouldn't work out in my favor even for the right amount of money. I want to help in preventive way , i want to help prevent other animals from being euthanized unfairly. Maybe even find a way to get a no kill shelter in my city.

Even if he did show any sign of aggression towards another animal (which again, i do not believe), that doesn't mean he wasn't adoptable, they have a spot for whether or not they are good with other animals on their adoptive paperwork for a reason.

Update 2:

I also want to add that they didn't even do the 4 day analysis, they said he was up for adoption that day.

You can donate to a local Pittie rescue - they are always desperate for money and help.

Anything you do to try and "get back at" this shelter is just going to take away resources from other dogs that land there. That isn't a step in the right direction, and will fix nothing. It will kill more dogs.

Shelter workers have a thankless job, and every dog that is euthanized takes a part of their heart with them. It sounds as if they knew this was going to be a hard conversation, but it also sounds as if this dog may have struck out at another and shown enough to make him untrustworthy in an adoptive home. They sound like good people - and have few and bad choices to make too often.

Bottom line - the best thing you can do is to enable the people who work to give dogs like this a better chance. The more slots there are for any breed of dogs coming into rescue, the more chances there will be for the ones in the shelter. Help them, and you will help many dogs in memory of the one that couldn't be helped.

Your story is so much like mine! I experienced a similar situation many years ago. I was young and I didn't realize that most dogs brought to shelters were killed. I actually thought they gave them a chance to find a home, at least a week.

In my case it was a healthy puppy that was german shepherd mix and intelligent as can be. I brought her to the vet on Friday for more of her shots and she was healthy. I took her to the shelter ("Humane" Society) on Saturday. Sunday a friend of my mom's, who was an animal activist, told me what happens to dogs at the shelter. So I went up there Monday morning and it turns out the puppy was put to sleep the day I dropped her off. I screamed and cried and demanded to know why. They LIED and told me that she was sick with a contagious disease. It was an outright lie! Like I said, she was at the vet with a clean bill of health the day before I took her in.

Anyway, it is so very sad. But, there is not much you can do about it other than to get the word out to educate others. And, for everyone that puts down craigslist in the pet section, then this is why I am a fan of it. It gives people more opportunities to rehome pets without going the shelter route.

You can hire an attorney to look into the matter. He will in turn hire a private investigator to do this. At the conclusion, your attorney will tell you if he thinks you have a case for animal cruelty against the shelter company. Of course, they'll have their own attorney. If the matter goes to court, you will probably lose, since there aren't any laws that prevent a shelter from euthanasia. The total cost will be between $5,000 and $15,000.

Other than that, I can only suggest that you become a super hero to save dogs when you grow up.

You know what...many shelters in my area are *shady*...there has been a lot going on here, with shelter workers selling purebreed dogs privately, saying they were euthanised or "ran away" when they were sold. I don't know about your shelter, but you can tell the media your story. A nice human interest story, will get some eyes watching in the right direction. So tell a local newspaper or local newschannel if you want. It was nice of you to have tried.

Unless the shelter did something that goes against their charter with the city/county, there is nothing you can do. When you relinquish a dog to a shelter, you relinquish all rights to the dog. I am sure they had you sign something when you turned him over to them and it would have stated the shelter's standard procedures. Sorry.

Sorry, I don't know what to do, but I agree, it was very unfair. I bet some of them just hate pits, but I personally LOVE pits. Its the people who train them to be aggressive, not the whole breed.

There was a reason that the dog was euthanized. Employees are not allowed to give out that kind of info.
