have you saw this gun by the navy,?

The Office of Naval Research hopes its new test phase — scheduled to last until 2017 — leads to a Navy weapon capable of hurling 40-pound projectiles at speeds of 4,500 mph to 5,600 mph over 50 to 100 miles (7,240 to 9,010 kilometers per hour over 80 to 161 kilometers).

From what I've seen I can't really tell how much progress they've made in the last 20 years. I remember when I was in college seeing a video demonstration of the Navy destroying rail cars with a 40 pound slug. At the time the problem was that power requirements were enormous making the system really hard to build on a mobile platform. I also want to say they were running around 10,000 feet per second which would be about 6,800 miles per hour. That may have been the objective and they weren't there yet I don't quite remember.

I really hope that the budget on this doesn't get killed or politicized - at least for military artillery options, rail guns are the wave of the future, in my opinion. The physics makes sense for a wide range of applications and you don't have some of the limitations that weapons like MetalStorm have.(basically still a chemical reaction as the propellant which limits the pressures that can be generated. Propulsion with a compressible gas as certain issues when you try and start pushing the boundaries.)

Power is the problem though - all of that kinetic energy has to come from somewhere.
