Toyota Rav4. Very reliable, relatively reasonable price. They can be spendy because they do hold their resale value so well because of their longevity. An AWD 4cyl will get you up to 28 mpg.

Honda Element and supposedly Mazd CX-5. Not rav 4 or equinox, definitely nor Mazda Tribute. Why do people answer with seats that have an incline? Most SUVs now have rear seats that fold sort of flat, but that was *not* your question.

I have a Ford Edge....seats go down with a touch of a button and hatch has hands free remote, seats do not lay flat completely... little incline, but flat enough for 24x36 dog crate and plenty of room for accessories, very smooth ride, gas mileage is so-so but very reliable and **American Made**.

Generally, they do. I drive Subaru Legacy (a moderate version of Outback) and when the rear headrests are removed, the rear bench seat can be folded down to form a flat surface.

This may not be large enough for what you have in mind, but I have a Pontiac Vibe, which I selected specifically for the fact the seats in the back laid flat and I could place 3 crates for dogs (border collies) to travel to dog events and so on. It's manual shifting, and it gets on average 32 mpg.

I recommend checking out the GMC Terrain or the Chevrolet Equinox. I believe they would provide you with what you are looking for in a vehicle.
