Dark Energy / Dark Matter?

First, dark energy and dark matter are unrelated to each other as far as we know. The word "dark" just means "we don't know what it is."

Dark energy is the cause for the increasing rate of expansion of the universe. Given the amount of matter and its gravitational pull, the universe should be just coasting along. Instead it is growing at a faster and faster rate. We assume that it is in the nature of empty space to expand. The expansion seems to be the same everywhere, especially in the nearly empty space between galaxies. This means it is not related to gravity or negative gravity.
