Why are the creators of anime so obsessed with horrible endings?
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, Planet of the Beast King..the list goes on and it's almost like anime CAN'T have an ending without at least one of the main couple in it dieing or the main character dieing. Is this a social norm in Japan or what? It seems like no anime can have a good ending and I've been watching anime for a long while. If the main characters aren't dead within the last 10 minutes I just seem to wait for the bullet and I'm rarely wrong.

Well, there's more than a few possible reasons. Some of which are :
-It adds reality to the story.
-It's not the animators that like it, it's what the "demand" is for so they "supply" it.
-Twist of irony.
-Psychological Thriller
-Everything has a trade off. ("Law of Equivalent Exchange", so to speak, they can't achieve their "ultimate goal" without sacrafice.)
Things like this, you know? And, not all anime is like that. There is a lot where the main characters don't die. Maybe you are just one of those "demanders" that they are "supplying" this type of scenerio to and you just don't realize it.
Source(s): Some examples : -Code Geass -InuYasha -YuYu Hakusho -Darker Than Black -Devil May Cry -Rurouni Kenshin -Vampire Knight -Blood + -Vampire Hunter D -Trinity Blood Those are just a few, there are many more. And, I tried to list some dark and tragic anime to show that the outcome can still be this way. Hope I helped a little. -just me, an anime lover obssessed, who grew up watching anime and now have children of my own who love it, too, sharing personal thoughts / opinions / experiences- - Rachel BrownLv 69 years ago
Well actually most anime i watch always have happy endings, and i hate happy endings. Sad and memorable endings are so much more entertaining and leave an imprint on the people who watched it.

That's not entirely true I watched many anime's too but there are still many have good endings. Maybe you just happen to like the genre where death is inevitable.

I think its the kind of genre of animes you watch. I usually watch eitther drama filled or shoujo animes and theyre endings are pretty upbeat.
