My mom will not fax my college her and my father's tax returns and they need them so I can go. What can I do?
For some reason, my college wants my parent's tax returns or I cannot go. I have a strained relationship with my parents, that's all I'll say about the situation & I have not lived with them since I was 17. They live in a different state then me and I have my own apartment and I am 19. I asked them to fax the information and they said absolutely not. I don't know what to do, this is very upsetting. If you have any advice or know of a way that I can get this information please, any help will be greatly appreciated.

All you can do is talk to your school's financial aid office and plead your case. If you have a copy of an e-mail from your mom stating that she refuses to provide the requested information, that might help.
Ask the school if they will accept copies of your previous tax returns, showing that you are not being claimed as a dependent on anyone's tax return, as well as proof that you have been paying your own rent for over a year.

Hey Ed, this is going to be a financial aide issue and the parent's returns are very important.
Did you emancipate at 17, or just move out?
Have them put in writing that they will not be assisting your education in any way, monetarily or otherwise, that might be a start.
Go and speak with the financial aide office, they will be able to direct you.

This makes a sturdy case for constantly printing out a replica of your tax return on your report. what's inaccurate with basically duplicating the return? in case you do not have the applying, somebody else ought to have it. you nevertheless have your information from which you waiting the return, good? you are able to ask IRS to fax the transcript to you after which you would be able to fax it to the college. I doubt they are going to fax it directly to them besides the shown fact that it won't harm to ask. in the event that they gained't fax it in any respect, wager you would be gazing for the postman.

Unfortunately there's nothing that you can do. You must submit copies of their returns with your FAFSA. Without them you cannot apply for financial aid. Your only possible way around it is to try to qualify under the family estrangement rules, but that is very tough to prove. A recalcitrant parent who refuses to give you copies of the required tax returns is NOT enough to prove estrangement.
You are treated as a dependent for financial aid purposes until you turn 24, marry, support your own child more than 50%, enter the military on full time active duty, complete your undergrad degree and start a graduate or post graduate program of study, or are actually estranged from your family.
@Ed Fox: To apply for financial aid for school, a student must supply copies of their and their parents' tax returns. That is used for income verification to determine the student's eligibility for and the amount of any financial aid for post-secondary education. This has been standard practice for decades.

The only reason your school would want their returns is for issues of financial aid. And there is no legal means to force your mom to co-operate. If you can't go without financil aid, then wait a year until you have proof of independence and simply do it without your parents.

If your school doesn't get their returns, it doesn't mean you can't go. But it probably does mean you can't get financial aid, so you'd have to come up with the money yourself to pay for it. For financial aid, not much you can do if your parents won't send their returns.

Nothing. You can't force her to provide them. There is no way to get the info unless they provide it freely.

There is no valid reason for a legitimate college to require your parents' tax returns. It is an unnecessary invasion of privacy. Perhaps you should report this college to the Department of Education.
