Does it REALLY matter what you mix liquor with?

I mean, the goal is too lighten the harsh/bitter taste of such alcohols like Whiskey and Rum, right? So, my question is, does it really matter what you mix it with as long as it's some kind of fruit drink or cola.

Update:

Uhhh jonathan... can you explain why it matters? I mean, for example.. does a Martini actually taste better simply because it has Gin in it?

Yes... it matters. Quite simple you said it. Harsh taste. If the goal is to get drunk does it matter how? It also has to do with taste.

Say for example you told me you liked scotch and cola. I would serve that to you. Most scotch drinkers either drink it on the rocks, straight (neat), or a splash or two of water, perhaps to the top with water. That is all pure taste of what you like in scotch. Cola would be strange but... I have tried it, it is OK. I would rather do it the other way to enjoy the scotch.

Whiskey and rum are no different. Rum normally is mixed with fruity (citrus) type drinks. Can be coconut, etc. Depending on if it s a spiced or clear rum. The real thing to me is are you trying to hide the spice or enhance it? If you mix rum, I would think a clear rum would be better.

Whiskey is a little more unique in the sense that when you add a little water... it changes to where you taste the "sweetness" in the bourbon whiskey.

Jumping to Gin... whole different creature. It almost always tastes better with tonic and lime as they compliment each other. You can drink it straight or on the rocks or even with club soda. That is not the norm.

James Bond made the vodka martini popular, which is not a true martini in the traditional sense. To me... vodka on the rocks or a splash or two of water (double shot of vodka) is about perfect. As you can taste the vodka "flavor". Depending on the vodka. My Favorite is Finlandia. Depending on the vodka like Stolli... I want it with OJ period. I really don't care for the original Stolli flavor. Funny... I am half Russian!

    Cheers!

What you mix your liquor with is just going to depend on your personal taste preferences.

There's really no right and wrong things to mix with. There's just mixes that are commonly preferred by a lot of people.

If you're not one of them so be it. Experiment with different mixes until you find something you like!

No. You can mix it with vinegar if you want to. But people have found, over the years, that some combinations taste best to most people.

If it tastes good then go for it. I put my white wine in lemonade and it actually doesnt tast that bad. I like it. You can add in anything as long as you dont take it with meds

Try it any way you think you will like. And if you like it, drink it. Personally, I ask for my daiquiris to be made with vodka instead of rum. Technically, then it's not a daiquiri, but whatever.
