Does anyone remember the muffin man?
Not the guy who lived down Drury Lane (!) but the chap who came round the streets up to the late 40's with a tray of fresh muffins on his head? My Mum used to buy from him and we'd sit in front of the fire, usually in a blackout, and toast the muffins which we then coated in thick butter (sorry, margarine as butter was rationed). Anyone?

That was not so in the USA. There was a huckster selling veggies from a horse and wagon, even a fish vendor in the winter. The summers featured a man with a pushcart and a block of ice selling flavored, shaved ice.
Every neighborhood had a bakery where you could buy fresh rolls, pastries and bread within a short walk.
In the fifties, I remember the first Good Humor truck selling ice cream that was cooled by dry ice. Downtown, the big sales item was soft pretzels with mustard and hot dogs sold by vendors with carts. In the winter, when it was freezing out, I remember the street vendors would wipe their nose and then serve their customers. That was the first real vaccination against disease known to man! Nobody ever died eating a snot-covered soft Philly pretzel. Ask any of us who survived them!
