What is the best grass seed for growing in just about any soil.?

I have been trying to find a grass seed that will grow in just about any soil without much luck. I know I need to plant now while the ground is soft and it has time to germinate. Live on 2 acres but only 1/2 of it is lawn. Just want to have a hardy lawn because we have a big dog. Please advise. Thanks

Update:

Live in Mi and the soil is a combination of sand in areas and clay in others. Mild winter here this year. Where can I find centipede grass? I know how to plant it I just don't know what to plant.

Centipede is a warm season grass and won't work in MI. here's a web site:http://www.lawngrass.com/states/michigan.html

You didnt tell us if you have shade, that's a common concern. Grasses grow either as creepers or as bunch grass. Tall fescue is a bunch grass, pretty tough, but when stressed by dogs and the compaction, the grass becomes clumpy. That's where having a creeper in the mix may help, like bluegrass or creeping red fescue. Problem is that combo isn't as "uniform" as many lawn snobs approve.

Dogs are murder on lawns. You will not have a lovely lawn if there is a dog on it. The compaction o their walking about kills grass...probably makes pathways. The pee and poop also is tough on grass. So do the best you can, but realize you'll not have a golf course out back.

I have and have had big dogs on a acre of K31 pasture tall fescue. Ugly grass but it has resisted the dogs very well....for 32 years......but I do have paths. I can even see them on sateliltte photos of my yard !

MI is a good grass growing area, I wish you luck.

I hope you scattered straw on top of seeded area,as this will keep the seeds in place and keep them moist! Water generously every day! you should begin to see new grass within 7 to 12 days depending on the water they get during the day! Good-Luck!

It all depends on where you live, the climate and the soil. It's totally different in the northern part of the US from the south or the southwest.

You should be able to find a blend in stores in your area for grasses that will survive in your area. Blends are good because the mixture contains seeds of various types of grass that will live in shade or sun. Even some that survive in draught. The seeds best able to live on your soil will survive and the others will die. Natural selection is action.

But just don't scatter the seed on top the ground and expect it to grow. You need to cover the seed with soil and water it for the seeds to germinate. They don't need to be planted deep. Just deep enough so they don't dry out.

Centipede grass work really good. Its very hardy and hard to kill. And it doesn't grow very tall at all so you rarely have to mow it. I live in an area where the ground is pretty much sand, so there's not much nutrients and it does well
