Shedding? Allergies? Mange? HELP!?

I have a Aussie mix who is roughly a year old. Lately, I have noticed he has been very itchy. So itchy, in fact, that he had chewed a bald patch at the base of his tail. After some worry about what this could be (allergies? mange? hot spot?) we took him to the vet and determined he had some fleas that he was allergic to. A flea bath, a dose of Capstar, and an application of Frontline later we assumed that we had gotten rid of the fleas. But he's still itchy! The bald patch is growing back and we've been giving him Benadryl but I've noticed that there is a TON of his fur around lately. When I was brushing him, the brush would come up full of his fur and it's all over my bedroom floor. It's not in huge clumps or anything, though.

Because he is still scratching, I'm concerned about allergies and maybe even mange but could it be shedding?

I plan on taking him to the vet on Monday morning, to assure everyone. He has been on the same food for more than 4 months and only recently began itching (1.5 weeks). He does have a flea allergy and although he's on Frontline, I guess it's possible he still has them but I haven't seen any.

What should I do?

Update:

The apartment complex did send an exterminator to take care of the apartment and my dog has been dewormed.

Update 2:

Can a food allergy develop later in life? This literally JUST started within half a month and he has not had any change in food.

Update 3:

My dog has seizures on Advantix; it was the first flea preventative we tried with him.

I'm wary of switching him to grain free - he was initially on a grain free diet and the high protein did something with his muscles? When we made the switch months ago to his current food, his muscle health improved tremendously. The base of his current food is lamb.

If your dog has mange, stay away from Ivermectin and Amitraz (the most commonly prescribed medications for mange by vets. These have toxic chemicals that are harmful to the health of your dog. See the links below.

Instead, check the Internet for mange medications that are safe and made with natural ingredients that will not be dangerous to humans and pets. There are a number of them out there.

I used a spray product that I thought was easy to use and worked quickly which you can find about at http://www.florapetnaturals.com/

Aussies are heavy shedders, and it is that time of year. But itching doesn't typically accompany shedding that i've ever heard of.

Yes, food allergies can "develop". Or, just like with people, can take some time to show up (the allergen builds in the system.) If could also be seasonal allergies (my dog licks her paws in the spring but is fine the rest of the time hardly even looks at them.)

And just FYI Frontline is no longer the best prevention to use. I know a lot of dogs that have gotten fleas/ticks on it. It's weakening or the fleas/ticks are developing immunity to it.

There are a few things you can do:

    - One, when you're at the vet ask for a skin scraping to test for mange and other parasites. Rule those out first.

    - Two, switch to a grain-free food (no grain, no corn, no rice, etc) with a fish or venison meat base with lesser ingredients being potato and/or veggies/fruits.

    - Three, try Advantix or Advantix 2 instead of Frontline.

    - Four, bathe him in an oatmeal shampoo every 6 weeks or so and spend a good 30-60 minutes per day just brushing out that shedding undercoat.

    - Five, ask your vet about Benadryl. Giving this will help with seasonal allergies.

If you didn't flea bomb the house or have it sprayed by a pest control company I would say the flea eggs in the carpet are hatching and reinfesting your dog. This will keep happening until you treat the environment to get rid of all flea eggs and larvae.

The Frontline will kill the fleas that bite your dog but fleas don't live on the dog, they live in the environment and that's where your problem is. Just so you understand the issue, 10 fleas can increase in poplation to 25,000 fleas in the space of 2 weeks.

I hope the vet gave you an all wormer that deals with tapeworm because dogs with fleas have tapeworm from ingesting fleas when they bite at the itch. When you go to the vet on Monday ask for an all wormer for tapeworm and give it to your dog as per vet instructions.

Food allergies can develop later in life without making any changes to the diet. My dog suddenly became allergic to food made from beef. Food allergies are mainly caused by the type of meat used in making the dog food. Going to the vet is the best plan but changing the food may help, but it won't be an instant fix. You could try dog foods made with duck, chicken, lamb etc. Good luck!

Did you treat his environment for fleas? Treating the dog but not the dog is useless. Get a flee comb and check for fleas, if there on no fleas the you need to check or allergies, First is no grain, the no chicken. given them both 2 week to work

Sounds like an ongoing flea allergy and your vet might try another flea repellent...that's my guess. Best of luck to you !!! If he is shedding, and this is the time of year, he shouldn't be itching and scratching....you should be brushing lots of hair out. Best of Luck!!!
