Why do people feel the urge to be so mean to eachother on the Internet?
I will get on facebook, or YouTube, or even just Yahoo answers (anything with a comment section), and I will see full on arguments between people who have never even met over the silliest little things, simply because they don't see 100% eye to eye on an issue.
They're not civil, mature discussions, either. These arguments contain profanities to the max, duragatory and vulgar names, and all sorts of downright degrading things. It honestly makes me very sad. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but bashing others because their opinion is different? I mean honestly! What is this world coming to? I thought the Internet was about progress, and this seems to be the opposite.
This is all disturbing, but the most disturbing thing of all is that nothing is being done about it. I'm not saying that we should limit the Internet and freedom of speech, but I do think some awareness should be spread. Please don't tell me I am alone on this. I'm not even an old lady crying about "kids these days!", I am a teenager.

You are most definitely NOT alone in your thinking on this topic. Wisdom is Wisdom regardless of age and I agree with your assessment of the situation.
In my opinion, there is no single reason why people are so discourteous and intolerant. I have observed a steady decline in common politeness and sharp rise in a "US or THEM" mentality. Rudeness is celebrated and even though I have watched numerous TV Morning News programs that purport to have Anti Bulling themes--follow up the segment with some "snarky" fashion critic thrashing a celebrity for wearing whatever garment in a nasty, uncivil, and personally derogatory manner.
Some people have the belief that they are anonymous and can therefore launch verbal assaults and insults on others because they are on the Internet. Place many of those people physically in front of the person/people they are insulting and it's a different story. The Computer Screen is something of a Tank-like Armor that allows such people to behave in such an atrocious fashion. They can hit and run without consequence. I think that is the answer to your question.

I think those people must get a lot of practice. Also they are just looking something to start trouble over. Before I would be mean to anyone on the internet I would just stay off. Life is just to short for that. I can really say that because in June I will be 76 years old. LOL I am retired disabled and I enjoy my computer and get along with everyone.
