Are the Jehovah's witnesses right about the trinity? (Please read details before you answer)?

They came to my door and we had a very long conversation about the trinity. They told me to do reasearch on the trinity and gave me a book about why the trinity is wrong. I did some research and found that Christian churches did not believe in the trinity before the Council at Nicea, where a pagan man named Constantine established the dogma at the end of the 4th century. Also, in many pagan religions, there were triads of gods that resembled the modern trinity in almost every way. The word trinity is not in the bible once. The Holy spirit is personified throughout the bible, but so are wisdom, sin, death, water, and blood. If the Holy Spirit was a person, it could not "fill" a person (Luke 1:41). The Holy Spirit is depicted as a force (Psalms 104 28-31), (2 Peter 1:21), (Acts 4:31). If the holy spirit is God's act of force, then how can it be god? Jesus could not have been his father if his will was separate from his father, (Matthew 26:39), and praying to himself for help would be equally pointless. Some trinitarians say that the godhead is composed of 3 separate individuals with equal power, but then why would Jesus pray to his equal? And why would he say that his father was greater than him? (John 14:28) In addition read John 8:17,18; Acts 7:55,56. The bible says that Jesus was a created being (Col. 1:15,16). The bible says that all things were created through him, and that is why when God speaks it is in plural in the beginning. (Colossians 1:16,17) When it says "all things were created through him", in certain translations, in the original Greek it said "all other things" (panta). If you doubt that, the RS, JB, and NE translate patna as all other, any other, and anyone else in Luke 13:2. In Mark 13:32, it says that God knows something that Jesus doesn't know, and the holy spirit doesn't know, would be immpossible if they were a trinity. Read Matthew 20:20-23, 12:31,32. 1 Corinthians 11:3, 1 corithians 15:27,28; John 17:1-3, 1 corinthians 8:5,6; 1 peter 1:3,John 20:17. For everyone that says that because they are both called savior, read Titus 1:3,4, Jude 25, and Acts 13:23. For everyone who says that because his apostels call him god, in psalms men of power, judges, were adressed as gods, again in John. John 10:34-35 and Psalms 82:1-6. Plus, jesus is called lord and god, but never Yahweh, the name of the father, or god almighty, a title reserved for the father. Also, just because they are mentioned together in mattew 28:19 and 2 corinthians 13:14 does not mean that they are a trinity. At John 1:1,2, in original greek, quoted from Philip B Harner, an ancient greek expert, "I think perhaps the clause could be translated, "The word has the nature of god", or being Godlike. Being godlike, however, does not make one a god, judging how god "created man in his image", and humans are obviously not gods. Several reliable bibles translate John 1:1 in this way, like Mo, NTIV, and AT. For all the people who give the "I am" argument, the original greek phrase used was ego eimi, or I have been, when dealing with time, which the context was, and again, several bibles(AT, Mo, CBW, and SE) translate it in this manner. Romans 9:5 interpretations are still under debate by several ancient greek scholars, so it is not reliable evidence. Colossians 2:9 is debated as to it's translation of god dwelling in christ, or divine quality dwelling in christ, the latter again making him godlike. Compare that phrase to Colossians 3:1. For John 10:30, the word for one is the greek hen. The same wording is used in John 17:21,22, and that would mean that Jesus's disciples become a part of the trinity, making it not a trinity. The kind of "oneness" used was a sense of togetherness of purpose. Thank you for reading my rather lenghthy details. I ask that all responses have scripture quoted to back up everything said, and if no scripyure is quoted, then I will ignore your answer. I am not a Jehovah's Witness, just a Methodist trying to find the truth. Please no atheists who just say the bible is crap, or people who say things without proof. Thanks in advance!

Update:

For all of you people that say that he is not equal as a human only, read Philippians 2:6,7, which state that before christ was human, he was still not equal to god.

look, this whole "trinity" debate is just a red herring to divert you from looking at the man behind the curtain, the watchtower.

if you examine every scripture describing who god is, you find

The Father is God (see John 6:27; Ephesians 4:6; 1 Peter 1:2)

The Son is God (see Mark 5:19-20; Luke 8:39; John 8:58)

The Holy Spirit is God (see Luke 4:18; John 14:16-17, 26; Ephesians 4:30)

There is One God (see Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10; 1 Corinthians 8:4)

do not take my word. search the scriptures for yourself. let god speak to you.

now, this "trinity doctrine" is just a summary of what scripture says.

you can attack this doctrine all you like, but scripture still says what it says.

christians accept the entire word of god.

jws have a different approach which has been indoctrinated into them via watchtower magazines.

when they see a scripture such as john 20:28 where jesus is declared to be god, they do not accept what it says, but instead perform the "reasoning" they have been taught from their watchtower magazines and make it MEAN something different. then they call it "truth", and you have to accept this "reasoning" to be a jw, even though it directly contradicts what the bible really teaches.

so your question is actually only a symptom of a larger issue of how to interpret the bible.

do you accept what the text says?

or do you accept the "reasoning" prepared for you by some guys in brooklyn who own a publishing company?

Yes they're right about the trinity dogma. The Roman Catholic Church is very clear that the trinity dogma is not a teaching of scripture but of the clergy. They view the clergy as having the right and authority to teach/interpret The Scriptures any way they want and that no one else has this right.

When the dogma of the trinity came in to the church that is also when the persecution of those that disagreed came into the church. The spirit of persecution is the spirit of Satan.

When Nicea was convened there were 304 bishops attending out of a possible 5,000 bishops of the church. These 304 presumed to speak for the whole church and came up with the trinity. There were other other councils called that were attended by majorities of the bishops and these anathematized the trinitarian teachings of Athanasius but they don't want to talk about those councils.

Eusebius, the first church historian outside of scripture, was opposed to the trinity. That's why he's not called a saint but he is referred to as a reliable source of church history. Trinitarians want everyone to think the matter was settled in 325 but the debate has NEVER gone away. 325 didn't even talk about the holy spirit and what it was and how if figured into the newfangled trinity. That came later at Chalcedon.

Most people that say the believe in the 'trinity' don't even know what it is.

It's a catch phrase, buzzword, whatever you want to call it that the 'in people use.'

Side point: Constantine was supposedly 'converted' on his deathbed and baptized as an 'Arian Christian' by an Arian bishop. Even pagans know 1+1+1=3, not 1.

    Calvin,

you can bang your head against the wall until it falls off when you talk to trinitarians as they take a man made creed over what the Bible really teaches. The trinity is not a Biblical teaching as you correctly stated.

Jesus said that only the meek ones, or those that are teachable, and willing to accept the truth contained God's Word, will inherit the earth and live forever on.(Matt. 5:5). If you are searching for the truth continue to do so objectively with a open heart and mind when looking into God's Word. Jehovah will guide you in seeing the truth IF you are willing to accept it.

Listen to the Son of God, Christ Jesus, when he said that the ONLY TRUE GOD is his Father, NO ONE ELSE. (John 17:3)

My Jehovah bless your efforts! Do not let anyone, especially on here, influence your thinking!

    You are correct!

That was a wonderful Bible-based explanation! You will find that Jehovah's Witnesses will back up every single thing with the Bible. Plus we also obey what God tells us in His Word.

I think you have found that we do not let any human traditions or pagan beliefs taint what the Bible really teaches.

    Keep up the good work!

They are correct that the Trinity is not real. How could it be? It is so stuipid to think that Jesus and God are one! If you belive in the Trinity, then u would probably think that God came to earth, because u believe that God is Jesus. Infact, how could God have came to earth? Who would be ruling in heaven? The angels? NO. Jehovah God! He cant be on earth and being control of heaven at the same time! It would only make sense that they are seperate. That Jesus is gods son. Jesus came to earth and God stayed up in heaven. They are not ONE. it wouldn't be possible

Source(s): I did my own thinking on this one. Its common sense. But in the Bible there is really actual proof that the Trinity is fake. But people already showed you the scripture in their answers.

    1) I did some research and found that Christian churches did not believe in the trinity before the Council at Nicea, where a pagan man named Constantine established the dogma at the end of the 4th century.

I don't know where you did your "research," but it is certain that the information you received was incorrect. Constantine died in the early 4th century. Constantine did not devise the doctrine of trinity. The formalized (modern) doctrine of trinity was formally approved in the late 4th century - but the primitive doctrine of trinity can be found in writings predating Constantine's birth.. The Council of Nicaea does have relevance to the doctrine of trinity in that it formally and officially established the deity of Jesus as a Christian doctrine - but it does not otherwise have relevance.

But please: do not take my word for this. Please research again, making sure to use ONLY ***reliable*** and ***trustworthy*** sources of information. It is quite clear that the sources of your "research" are either intentionally deceptive or ignorant of the relevant history.

    2) Also, in many pagan religions, there were triads of gods that resembled the modern trinity in almost every way.

If you believe this, then one or both of these things is true:

a - you do not know what the modern doctrine of trinity teaches

b - you do not know the actual characteristics assigned to various pagan triad deities

I have admittedly limited knowledge about pagan triads, but the ones I do know are different from the doctrine of trinity in almost every particular characteristic excepting deity and number.

    3) The word trinity is not in the bible once.

Nor should we expect it to be. I won't explain: it's common sense. Think about it.

    4) If the Holy Spirit was a person, it could not "fill" a person

Conclusion does not follow logically from the premise. In other words: why do you say so? What is your evidence supporting your claim?

First, the Bible is right about the trinity doctrine; the Bible doesn't teach the trinity.

Second, we, Jehovah's Witnesses, are right that Jehovah God, Jesus Christ, and the holy spirit are not a trinity.

Third and last, The Jews, before Jesus birth, did not worship Jehovah God as a trinity, and therefore non of Jesus followers would have even known about Jehovah God as a trinity. The Bible, in Jesus day, didn't even have one verse to make the early followers of Jesus believe that Jesus was in a trinity.

Yes your question is long but very informative with logical and spiritual reasoning. I took the liberty of answering your additional details: Philippians 2:5-7: KJ reads: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.” (Dy has the same wording. JB reads: “he did not cling to his equality with God.”) However, in NW the latter portion of that passage reads: “who, although he was existing in God’s form, gave no consideration to a seizure [Greek, har·pag·mon′], namely, that he should be equal to God.” (RS, NE, TEV, NAB convey the same thought.)

Which thought agrees with the context? Verse 5 counsels Christians to imitate Christ in the matter here being discussed. Could they be urged to consider it “not robbery,” but their right, “to be equal with God”? Surely not! However, they can imitate one who “gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be equal to God.” (NW) (Compare Genesis 3:5.) Such a translation also agrees with Jesus Christ himself, who said: “The Father is greater than I.”—John 14:28.

God’s Son willingly accepted the assignment. This is evident from Philippians 2:5-8; he “emptied himself” of his heavenly glory and spirit nature and “took a slave’s form” in submitting to the transferal of his life to the earthly, material, human plane. The assignment before him represented a tremendous responsibility; so very much was involved. By remaining faithful he would prove false Satan’s claim, recorded in the case of Job, that under privation, suffering, and test, God’s servants would deny Him. (Job 1:6-12; 2:2-6) As the firstborn Son, Jesus, of all God’s creatures, could give the most conclusive answer to that charge and the finest evidence in favor of his Father’s side in the larger issue of the rightfulness of Jehovah’s universal sovereignty. Thereby he would prove to be “the Amen . . . , the faithful and true witness.” (Re 3:14) If he failed, he would reproach his Father’s name as none other could.

The Trinity is most defiantly a pagan teaching that has been modified into Christianity and "anyone" who has not had their mind blinded by Satan can see that it's pagan(2 Co 4:4)

Jesus said that no one comes to him unless his Father draws them, this statement in itself disproves the Trinity, why would 1/3rd of the godhead doctrine draw people to 1/3rd and not the whole person of God? (1 Corinthians 11:3 it says: But I want YOU to know that the head of every man is the Christ; in turn the head of a woman is the man; in turn the head of the Christ is God)

Humble-Desire, Effort,(Action) Humble-Maturity, (being willing to subjugate oneself to being the lesser, the one who seeks understanding, because of a recognized lack of it.)

These characteristics, are those that open the door to 1.Knowledge, 2. Understanding.

Some evidence is unavailable by text or peer-review, some evidence is only experienced on an individual level.

Personal experience and understanding is the only way to success, so too, personal experience and a desire to understand from humility, is the Only way to find evidence for God.

It's an individual thing, no one can have "personal experiences for another.

How to find completeness and contentment *and know God and his son Jesus Christ, is real without a doubt:

    The Instructions:

    Dan 10:12

Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.

    Chronicles 7:14

if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

    .Action:

    Be Humble.

I have found one trinity in the bible:

    According to Harper's bible dictionary.

    Baal / Bel

    translates into english as "Lord"

    literally means "son of god"

    was worshiped as a trinity.

thus if you worship the Lord, the son of god, in the trinity, you are a Baal worshiper.
