Will 16 GB ram improve my gaming experience?

I have a custom build with 8 gm ram right now. I have a radeon HD 6670 1GB. My CPU is a AMD FX-4170. I want to be able to play borderlands on 1080p, but I can only play it on 720p without it lagging at max settings. Other games like oblivion run flawlessly on 1080p max settings. Is there anyway I can have borderland play at 1080p at max settings without getting a new GPU?

Update:

I have to disagree with the CPU being the problem. It plays everything else flawlessly with absolutley no lag at 1080p except borderlands. Its my GPU not my CPU. I keep on hearing people trash this CPU, but in reality its performance is very impressive. I think its just intel fanboys that are hating on the FX line. My friend has an i7 on his 2 year old laptop and my PC blows his out of the water in performance. Its takes twice as long for his i7 to open a program like itunes compared to my FX-4170.

Update 2:

Also I hate Nvidia drivers. They always screw with my computer and cause conflicts with other drivers. Nvidia sucks at drivers.

Update 3:

Will I need 16 GB in the future? It may be hard for my to find the same Ram 5 years down the road. I want to keep the ram all the same.

Hi again Nova Kane, well, likewise said, having more RAM won't improve your Builds gaming performance. There are no games out there that can use more than 4 gb RAM and the most that a PC can use is around 6 gb RAM when you are doing HARDCORE stuff, thus 8 gb is the normal "SWEET SPOT" today (future proof), more than 8 gb will just be useless thus a waste of money.

Gaming actually relies heavily on your GPU (75%) and on your CPU (25%), they are the ones in charge of increasing your framerate while playing. The better they are, the higher your framerate would be.

Oblivion is actually not very GPU demanding thus you could run it flawlessly with your HD 6670, If you really wanted to test the limit of your build, try playing BF3 on 1080p and see if on what settings you could play it.

regarding your FX-4170, I have already stated my piece regarding this on your other question like what the other guy here is saying, thus I need not comment about it.

To improve your gaming experience, there is no choice but to get a more powerful GPU. The least expensive and best performing card (price/performance ratio) that I could confidently recommend to you is this:

    SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - $170 ($160 after rebate)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

With this card, you could play ALL GAMES on high-max settings (depending on game's requirement) on 1080p.

BTW, the recommended power for the HD 6870 is 500W or greater thus a 600W Branded PSU is the IDEAL PSU to get:

    http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/am...

And here is a good 600w branded PSU if ever you would need one:

OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 and AMD Phenom - $69 ($44 after rebate)

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

EDIT : You know Nova Kane, Many are saying or commenting the same about the FX processors because IT IS THE TRUTH, it doesn't make all of us AN INTEL FAN BOY, Like it or not, even AMD's older PHENOM II x 4 cpu's are better than the FX cpu's, the real game benchmarks doesn't lie.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-fx-pent...

I myself have an AMD cpu once and I was definitely satisfied with its performance, until I decided to give it to my older brother as a gift.

BUT, that doesn't mean that your cpu isn't good enough for gaming. IT IS INDEED MORE THAN ENOUGH as long as you pair it up with a powerful GPU since gaming relies on the GPU more (75%) as I have stated earlier.

Short answer. Yes ram will help, but you will likely not be able to run at max settings. You may want to consider a new GPU before more ram. A Nvidia 550 or higher, or an ATI 7K series card.

All specs will help improve performance of a game.

CPU helps process the data faster.

Faster and bigger graphics card will help process the graphics better

More ram will allow it to run faster as well

Faster Hard drive is another factor, speed of drive and the amount of cache it has will speed things up. SSD is even better.

Network speed can also come into play if you have slow internet.

And something people overlook all too often. Fans... Keeping the computer nice and cool also helps improve performance.

Other things are game tweaks. While you can go into full res with the card, it may not be able to handle some of the rendering at that res. Consider tweaking the oversampling, shading, etc.. in the video options of the game to improve performance as well.

RAM is not the answer, almost nothing you do will ever use more than 4 GBs, from the build you have specified it seems your problem is your processor, the new AMD FX are really good looking on paper but perform horribly compared to older AMD or current Intel.

Also your graphics card is filth, if you can afford it spend $200 on one and buy an EVGA Nvidia 470

i only told you to fix your processor cause you said "without buying a new graphics card"

and not intel fanboy, i sited a references that disproves your claim about your filthy processor click the link before falsely defending an argument

No. RAM won't help at all. It's really too much for right now. I had 8GB, upgraded to 16, and felt no difference at all in anything. Instead, buy a new GPU, like a 6850 or 7770.

    Borderlands (not borderlands).

    More RAM will NOT help.

Read the minimum and recommended requirements on the game box.

    PS: What is 8 gm?

Anything above 8 GB is probably a waste for gaming.

here is a short and simple answer: games will not use more than 4gb RAM nowadays so if you want better performance, maintain your computer or consider upgrades.
