Try doing yoga for your back -- just find some stuff on YouTube. Yoga is awesome for relieving aches and pains.
As you know, you need to lose some weight. Long term, that will help your back more than anything else! Try WeightWatchers Online for Men, it is awesome.

try doing simple stretching exercises using your legs and lower back. Sounds as if you hamstrings have tightened up over a year of inactivity. Your hamstrings will actually shorten up if un-used and these little guys are attached to the buttock mucles and the muscles in your lower back.
Simple exercise are to lay on your back and just bring one knee to you chest and hold it. Just hold it long enough so you are not in pain. Then do the other leg. Another simple strech is to sit on the floor with you back agiasnt a couch and keep your leg straight out in front of you.
Thses will help you stretch and lengthen your hamstrings and ease the pain in you lower back. remeber even athletes strecth before a game just to prepare thier muscles. You need to do the same.

stephen, its cause you sat for a whole year on your lazy a.s.s and made yourself 40 pounds heavier. what the hell did you think would happen?
get off your a.s.s, eat right, exercise hard and get yourself into shape. you get no sympathy here. when i work the morning shift, i get up at 330 a.m. ... do you need a wake-up call???
