Water must to be pumped from a well 120 meters bellow ground level to a tower 5 meters high, once there the water falls freely to a 24,000 liter tank. In the well a typical centrifugal pump is put hanging at three meters over the water level and with six meters of a two inch diameter pipe for suction, and for pumping a two inch diameter pipe is to be used . What is the work done by the pump when 20,000 liters have been served to the tank; what is the power of a pump selected to do this work in 60 minutes.

F = m g = (20000 L* 1 kg/L) * 9.81 N/kg = 196200 N
d = 125 m
W = 196200*125 = 2.45E4 J
P = W/t = 2.45E4 J / (60 min*60 s/min) = 6.8E3 watts or 6.8 kW
