How did Lucifer acquire free will?

Angels are God's indentured servants, right? Free will is reserved for us awesome humans, right? So where did Lucifer obtain the will to go against God? And why did God grant that will to only one of His angels?

I'm not trying to have a go, but if there are scriptural/theological explanations I'd be very curious to hear them.

Update:

Were all angels given free will or was it reserved for humans? I've heard both from Biblical Christians. If there are any scriptural passages you could point me to or theological interpretations, it would help out a lot. I don't like just taking someone's word for it.

Update 2:

Again, any quote or citation to back up what you're saying and I'll be right there with you. I would actually like to read exactly what you all read to learn that information.

Satan had free will God gave all of His creation free will to sin, and 1/3 of the angels followed him. the below might help you understand more.

    http://www.gotquestions.org/more-angels-sin.html

Question: "Is it possible that more of the angels could sin?"

Answer: First Timothy 5:21 tells us, “I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.” No matter what view you take on election, the Bible is clear that God was somehow involved in choosing who would be saved.

God’s sovereign choices are seen throughout the Bible: He chose Abraham to be the father of many nations (Genesis 17:4-5); He chose Israel to be His special people (Genesis 17:7); He chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:35-37); He chose the twelve apostles to live with the Lord Jesus for three years and learn from Him (Mark 3:13-19); and He chose Paul to bring the gospel to many people, both personally and through his writings (Acts 9:1-19). In the same way, He has chosen people “out of every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9) to come to faith in Christ. Those whom He chooses will come to Him, and He will never cast them out.

The same appears to be true for the angels. Gods holy angels are elect – meaning God has chosen them. Perhaps God gave all of the angels a one-time choice to obey Him or not. In any case, those that sinned and followed Lucifer are lost and condemned. Those that chose to remain loyal to God are secure in that decision. The Bible gives us no reason to believe that it is possible for more of the angels to sin, any more than it gives us reason to believe that the elect will fall away and be lost forever.

This is why he fell: http://www.gotquestions.org/Satan-fall.html

Er, that's more of muslim belief that angels don't have free will.

Anyhoo, moving on. Angel is an english word derived from classical greek, which, in turn was translated from a hebrew word called malack. At least that's how it's pronounced anyway.

Malack basically means messenger, so angels are messengers of God.

In the original texts there is no mention of these messengers lacking free will.

Therefore, if old nick, that's Lucifer, wanted to rebel, then he could.

God gave FREE WILL to all his creation, Angels included. That is why Satan went against God, because of this...and that is why, some angels followed Satan. They too, had Free Will.

You see, in order to allow living creatures to be able to make up their own minds, there has to be Free Will. Without it, God would tell all things, when to do something, how to do it and where, etc.

We, angels and all...would then be just programmed robots...like our computers....

And therefore, we would not need our knowledge, so our technology would not exist...we wouldn't have cars, planes, computers, televions, houses, clothing.....nothing... We would not even know how to farm, because God would provide all the food.

Does that sound like us, currently?

So YES...all angels had Free Will...and some chose to go with Satan. ....that, like us, is their choice...and we can go the same way, ....IF we choose to.

All intelligent creatures of God have free will.

God has no pleasure in forced service. Seriously, can you find any pleasure if you record in your own voice 'I love you' and keep playing it the whole day?

Service/worship without free will is exactly like that.

an analogous way a number of human beings strengthen into jerks, the sin of delight. Humility is the distinctive function which recognizes that each and every physique we've and all we accomplish is God's paintings no longer ours. the different of humility is the sin of delight. delight in your self is undue vanity or self-love, which seeks interest and honor and instruments oneself in opposition with God. delight in issues like your history, your u . s . a ., and your toddlers are merely being grateful for presents from God. those are no longer the sin of delight. With love in Christ.

all beings created by God have free will

God just wants love. You can't have that unless one can choose to love and feel.
