whats the difference between a small engine oil filter and car oil filter?
I have a Kohler twin cam 18HP engine that has a Kohler oil filter on it. I went to buy one and it is $18, I can buy one for a car for like $3. I found one that fits perfectly and doesn't leak when running. My question is, will this one for the car be ok, like internally are they the same. Is the oil flow the same or is the small engine filter made differently.

I think that if you research the subject you will find that the small engine filters have a much lower bypass value. If the filter plugs the bypass opens and oil continues to the engine. If the bypass doesn't open and filter is plugged oil flow will stop. So the question you need to answer is, will my filter ever plug up? If the answer you come up with is no than you can use any filter that will fit. If the answer is yes or maybe, than stick with the one made for the engine and its' oil system. I will guarantee that you can find Kohler filters for less than $18.00. Stern also makes a filter that meets Kohler requirements.

There are filters that operate at high pressure and some can handle high volume. The purpose of the filter is to trap particles that are suspended in the oil stream. The better made filters (probably higher priced) will do a better job of cleaning the oil. I'm in charge of maintenance of a large fleet of rental equipment and most of the manufacturers of these machines will not honor a warranty claim if generic filters are used. I don't scrimp on something as important as a filter to save a few bucks, when an engine overhaul costs thousands of dollars... Get back with us next year and let us know if it worked!

maximum engine oil is sweet for 10,000 miles if the engine is in lifelike condition - some hundred more desirable on it really is now unlikely to make any distinction. in basic terms verify the oil: accurate up the point to the accurate mark on the dipstick and also you're good to bypass! replacing the oil potential emptying the oil pan and filling up with clean oil (plus a filter out change) - messy with out the right equipment, and severe priced.

If it fits it should work. Some oil filters have a bypass built in in case the filter gets clogged. You might want to call Kohler and ask if their filters have a bypass.
