Where do I check a dog I found for a microchip?

A friend was driving me home and we were on a busy road, there was a small Dachshund in the middle of the street with cars speeding by. My friend slowed down and I jumped out and grabbed her. I'm willing to take care of her but feel as though I should make sure there isn't an owner. What are my options for places to go to get her scanned for a microchip?

You need a special type of hand-held barcode scanner that can read microchips.

A vet or Animal Control Officer or Rescue Shelter will have one.

most all vets have a scanner ... and same with the local shelters. also you can call your local shelters and ask if anyone has called in missing a dog with that same description. you should post fliers stating only that you found a dog (no description and when people call make them describe the dog from size to sex and any other distinguishing features a picture would be best) well i hope if it does have a home it finds it, and if it doesn't ... lucky you!! you found ya a new buddy!!!

take her to the shelter and ask to scan for a chip. if she doesn't have one put an ad on craigslist, with no picture of her, and do not say male or female. title it " found daushund" and just say found dauchund at ____(where u found her) , then ask they send you either pictures of her or describe- color- gender- size- long hair or shorthair- wearing anything- etc. ~~ this will help. post ad for next few weeks, also post a few flyers that say the same thing as the ad, with your e-mail or number.

i had my most loved dog ever stolen/lost, it would've meant the WORLD to me if sombody had atleast try'd finding her home, instead of just keeping her. :'(

Your parents need to do a lot more before they allow you to keep the dog. You need to go, door to door, in the area the dog was found, to see if anyone knows who owns the dog. You need to contact animal control/shelters/rescues/and vets in your area. You need to place an ad in the lost and found section of your newspaper. You need to put up posters in the area, where the dog was found.

Most vet offices have a scanner and usually shelters or the pound will have them also.

Your local animal shelter will have a chip reader. A vet may not.

A vet, or a police station. They both have should have scanners for chips. If they do not, they would probably know where to go.
