My sister's hubby died this year and she needs new windows. Can u advise?
She has maybe 15 windows, 2 are picture windows, and lives in southeast Michigan. Her current windows are wood and do not fit right. She is concerned about security also. Her utility company said her house is not as energy efficient as her neighbor's. She wants to get new doors and locks also. She doesn't even know if wood or vinyl is best for windows, composit or steel for doors? Any advice welcome. Thank you!

1) I would get 2 - 3 estimates from the area window dealers and choose from that.
2) I would get the doors from Sears or Lowe's and let them install them, locks included.

There is no reason to use wooden windows with all of the low maintenance options available today which will outperform and outlast wood by far. I recommend vinyl-clad wooden (400 series) or composite framed (100 series) windows from andersen. Steel doors have the best seal to the weatherstrip (because it is magnetic like your refrigerator) but fiberglass doors look nicer and can hold up better than steel when exposed to a lot of water. If your door is under a porch roof or you have a good storm door, steel doors are more economical and more thermally efficient.
