What are Chinese characters called?

What's the word for chinese characters? I know when it's romanized is called pinyan. thx

    In Mandarin Chinese they're called hanzi. han4 zi

    When Romanized, the alphabet is called pinyin. pin1 yin1

    Hanzi. Chinese characters. Written like 汉字 BTW romaji is Japanese. Romanized Chinese is called pinyin.

    I think the word you're looking for is "ideographs" or "ideograms"--symbols representing entire words, but not necessarily depicting them, as hieroglyphs do.
