Why does everyone recommend Bona to clean hardwood floors? (not water, or steam mop)?

So... I was told by my contractor not to use my steam mop (the enviro steamer) on my new hardwood floors (though the packaging states safe for wood floors). The company that makes my floors also said never to steam clean hardwood floors. They also said never to clean my floors with water.

Instead they both reccomended Bona, because it's "safe for wood floors".

What I don't understand is the difference. My steam mop leaves the floors completely dry when it's finished. Within 1 second of going over an area, it's completely dry. The cloth that cleans the floor is at most damp, never wet. & they say that hardwood floors shouldn't be cleaned with water, yet the main ingredient in Bona is water, which you spray onto your floors directly and then wipe up.

I'm just confused as to why this is better. Not only am I using water, but I'm also putting chemicals on my floor. The whole reason I bought my steam mop was to sanitize my floors, and keep chemicals off (since I have a 1 year old).

Can someone please explain this to me?

Heat and moisture could damage the finish. Excessive moisture will cause the wood to swell and damage the floor. Both the manufacturer and the installer are trying to prevent you from damaging your investment. As long as you understand that using other methods of cleaning will likely void your warranties, you can clean your floor in any manner you choose.

IMHO, as long as you exercise caution and a little common sense, you can indeed use a steam cleaner on your floors. I would recommend a better quality steamer than the one you list, but that is a choice for you to make. At the very least, use the steamer a few times in an inconspicuous place to make sure that it does not mar the finish or cause any other problems to the wood flooring. When you are satisfied that it is safe, then proceed with the rest of the floor.

As to why you can use a sprayed on water based product like Bona over wet mopping goes back to my initial comments about excessive moisture damaging the floor. Spraying puts a light mist of a cleaning product over the surface of the floor, which is perfectly safe, particularly when it is immediately wiped back up. Following this example, you can indeed damp mop your floors with a sponge mop or hand rag, as long as you wring out as much of the water as possible.

    Hi,

A Steam Floor Mop will work well on wood floors because it is left on the floor for a second or two, which will not cause damage tot eh wood flooring. Steam Floor Mops are an excellent way to clean floors. Plain water or laying a cleaning solution mixed with water and left ont eh wood floor or an untreated wood floor will cause damage.

I have been in the cleaning business for over 30 years and I recently discovered a website dedicated to cleaning all types of floors including wood floors. You might want to check this website out, it is free of charge and loaded with a ton of information. http://www.keepingfloorsclean.com/

what you're trying to avoid is getting water under the finish. Pooling water as from mopping will do this. Steam is potentially even worse because it's a gaseous form of water, it can penetrate through much smaller pore sizes in your finish then condense in the wood below the finish or in the finish itself.
