To steam mop, or not to steam mop..?

I have new hardwood floors. I purchased a steam mop before they were installed thinking it would be great to sanitize my floors with no chemicals, and so easy! (bought the Eureka Enviro steamer, which on the box says good for use on wood floors).

However, my contractor said never to steam clean wood floors, and also not to use water to clean them. Here's where the confusion begins... he said the only safe thing to use on them is Bona. But Bona's main ingredient is water. It's just a solution you spray onto the floor, and then wipe clean. Why is this ok, but not steam cleaning, or just cleaning with a damp rag?

Can anyone tell me?

From my own experience with a steam-mop cleaner [ which I threw out] is....they can & do leave water marks, similar to steam irons on clothing! I think he gave you excellent advice.

There is a huge difference between lightly misting a cleaning product on your floor and immediately wiping it up, and flooding your floor. Yes, you can actually damp mop your floor with a sponge mop or rag, the keyword here is "damp" and not dripping wet. You do not want to use any product or method that leaves behind standing water lines or puddles. I would also caution you against using chemically treated pads, as the residue is toxic to children and pets.

If you want to steam clean your floors, you must have a machine that is capable of producing dry steam, such as the US Steam ES500. Even then you must use caution that the high temperature doesn't mar the finish, and you want to change the bonnet regularly to keep it from becoming saturated. Keep in mind, you just spent a lot of money on your new floors, do you really want to risk using a cheap appliance to clean them?
