Looking at a map, south by southeast. If it had run directly south it would have run straight to the coast which it didn't reach until it reached Anxur (Terracia). At which point it turned slightly east by northeast to Fundi (Fondi) then turned back southeast to reach the coast again at Formiae (Formia) and followed the coast through Minturnae (Minturno) and down to Sinuessa (Mondragone) At that point it turned east to Capu through Caudium (Arpaia) and on to Beneventum (Benevento). At Beneventum Via Appia itself would turn southeast.
