Why are there Holocaust denial laws in Europe?

Isn't freedom of expression important in those countries?

Update:

I personally wouldn't "deny" anything. It just sounds kind of stupid, that's all. If it really happened, wouldn't it be easily proven?

To stop haters from denying history

But you make a great point, it's against freedom of speech, and history must be supported by facts, not laws, keep forcing the truth and people will question it

To stop people denying that the Holocaust happened.

The laws are strongest in Germany and Austria - for obvious reasons.

Freedom of expression does not include shouting FIRE! in a crowded place - the laws were put in place to prevent murderous evil taking hold once again.

Why, do intend to deny the Holocaust?
