I'm 19, high school dropout, no GED, can I still go to college?
I'm planning on getting my GED very soon. I've always gotten good grades on tests, OUTSTANDING scores on annual STAR testing, but always had bad grades in class. Depression has seriously gotten in the way of school and my life. At times I feel like it's too late for me, since I screwed up in high school. but when I stop and think about it, I think, I'M ONLY 19! I just wonder how difficult it will be for me to get an education now.
At this point, what would be some good Careers for me to look into that won't take up too much of my time and money in school (I'd like to be done in 3 or 4 years)? I don't want to be in the medical field btw.
IDEALLY, I would love to pick up a new trade that I never though was possible for me, I.E. MUSIC. I absolutely adore Upright bass and violin. Piano too. I currently have no musical talent that I am aware of lol, don't know if that makes sense. But I can see myself being extremely dedicated to learning music. I'm open to lots of career ideas though. Preferably something that involves creativity.
Also, I live in California. Don't know what difference that makes, if any.

It is possible to get into some community colleges without a GED (if they offer able-to-benefit testing)
but you won't be able to use FAFSA generated Fin Aid unless you have GED or HS Diploma
so, if you plan to pay out-of-pocket & can find a community college with Able To Benefit, then you can go to school without GED
if you need to use Fin Aid, then you must get your GED
Most community colleges offer GED classes (in many, the classes are free, you just pay for the test)
Heat/AC is a trade that you can learn at a community college and get an associates degree & make decent money without being in the medical field.... same thing with Auto Mechanics
Another option that you should consider is JobCorp... it is perfect for someone like you who needs to get GED & would like to learn trades
Music... unless you already have talent... is not a career that someone without natural talent is going to make any money in... I would suggest you work towards something you already have some knowledge of

I would say get a job first to pay for ged classes but most basic jobs at least require you to have your high school diploma or GED. Is there anyone that would be willing to lend you the money for your classes, or invest in you? If not you can try to find something legal where you can make the money (ie delivery boy, or sell things you don't need anymore). Then get your GED classes and focus. You can just google GED classes to find some in your area and then proceed with the community college option. Good luck! I wish you the best and you certainly can do it!

Just like how you can't get into college without a HS diploma, you can't get in without a GED.
It's ok. Just wait until you get your GED and then apply.

In some states, you can go to community college without a GED. In other states, you cannot. However, the federal financial aid rules have just now changed, and you can no longer get financial aid to help pay for your studies unless you have a GED. So IMO, your first step is to get your GED.
You can sign up for GED prep classes via your local adult ed programs or community colleges. GED prep classes are very cheap, sometimes even free. There are also GED prep books at the library you can use.
Start with the GED, take all this step by step, and you'll get there!

It is never too late! If you REALLY want to go to college (not just because you think you have to) then do it! Get your GED, go to community college, and then transfer after a year or two. It's worh the effort if it is something that you truly want. However, if you don't think that college is right for you another idea would be to take some time off and travel. I think that traveling can really broaden your mind and and make you a well rounded person. As long as you are willing to put the time and effort in, you can do whatever you want.

You can attend community college with or without a GED. You can finish your GED at a community college. Many colleges have a variety of career training programs that can be completed in two years or less. After two years at community college you can transfer to a four-year college to complete your Bachelors Degree if you wish.
It's difficult to earn a living as a musician unless you are extremely talented. It's hard to earn a living as a musician even if you ARE extremely talented. But, it is also certainly not unknown. If you're passionate about music, by all means give it a try. One plan might be to train for a more "practical" career while pursuing your musical interests in your spare time. Consult the career planning office at your local community college for what career programs they offer.

You can't get into a community college OR a university without a GED. I would suggest for you to get your GED, enroll in classes at your local community college AND then transfer over to a 4-year school. Good Luck!

If you have a GED you can go to college. That's the only thing I can think of that is standing in your way. You're 19, that's young. You have plenty of time. I've already gone to school, became a hairstylist, and at 30 I'm going back to get into paralegal studies. it's never too late.
