What is your opinion of this quote?

“We may have a democracy or we may have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we cannot have both."

It was written in 1897 by Louis Brandeis, one of the most celebrated Justices in the history of the Supreme Court.

Or do you believe that those of great wealth have earned the right through their accumulation of that wealth to run the peoples Democracy?

Thanks to the Citizens United ruling, I believe that is a very true statement. Democracy is being stolen by those who control the media and those who buy the ears of politicians.

  • The corporate abuse of power structure continues to convince people to fight amongst ourselves using primitive hatred-centric narratives to divide potential factions of resistance against systematic exploitation and wealth extraction that is intent on making wage austerity and labor union devaluation tactics permanent using public policy legislation to perpetually entrench an American version of wealth-hoarding-centric capitalism as the predominant business/profit model that continues to rob production labor of comparative wealth by accelerating wealth transfer from the poor to wealth obsessed, money addicts.

I think it's a very appropriate quote for the way our country is heading right now.

It seems that money can buy anything, even politicians.

I really tried to understand where Mitt Romney is coming from: am always ready to hear a point of view but have to tell you, we're going to be in a lot of trouble if he gets the presidency in November. He will look after the rich & throw Democracy to the gutter.

Ironically Romney doesn't believe in America enough to keep his money here. It's seen more countries than he has!

The rich have lost touch with the hard working middle class so can't possibly make the right decisions for us.

Think about Communism: isn't that a concentration of wealthy dictators ruling every move the working people make & keeping them poor. There's no middle class. Sound familiar!!

I do not agree with that at all. America is supposed to be the place where people can come and prosper through hard work. And if some gain a fortune, then good for them. But that doesnt give them the right to run the country. A good example is Oprah Winfrey. She is one of the richest people today and yes, she may back a candidate, but she has no desire to go into politics and rule people. It appears she helps people with her money. So no, I do not agree with this saying.

They have absolutely no right to that wealth. They were all born with a silver stick in their @ss and had daddy give them their wealth. The 1% are the most uneducated, indoctrinated, clueless, greedy moronic people I've ever met in my life. And that quote is true. The wealth in a few hands run the country, not democracy. Our votes don't count, if they did George Bush would have lost the 2000 election. He had over 2,000 votes LESS than Kerry. F**K the gvoernment.

We don't have a democracy, we have a republic. And this is one of the reasons why.
