Long lines and treats. You MUST stop playing in this open lot until you get a handle on the recall. You are right, he IS going to get hurt if he chases that rabbit into the road or into a fence.

In a fenced in area when he walks away from you call his name & when he even glances at you take off running. This will make him want to chance you. If he comes up to you give him a treat then repeat again. You can even do this in the house. Like play hide-n-seek with him. When he's not in the same room with you go hide then call his name. He'll have to sniff you out & when he finds you either give him a treat or rub him & say good boy. You can even do this outside but do it in a fenced in area when first teaching to insure he can't escape after a squirrel or something.

Puppies have short attention spans so don't over do the first lessons cause they will get bored & find something more entertaining.

As to playing fetch have him fetch the toy then trade him the toy for a treat. Tell him "drop it" when he releases the toy for a treat then give the treat & a pet & a "good boy" & pick up the toy. Eventually you can wean off treats & just do petting and praise. Also this way you are teaching a new command too besides just playing fetch :)

First of all, untill your dog learns to come when called, NEVER let him off leash.

When practicing rollcall outside, use a very long leash that gives him a lot of room, yet not enough that you wont have controll. ((10-20 feet of leash will do)) Call his name, and praise him when he comes. If he wont respond to his name, bring out the treats and feed them to him when he comes. Once he comes reliably -without- the use of a treat, go to a FENCED area, and practice without the leash.

You can practice a small game of fetch indoors where there's no distractions to get him used to the idea of bringing things back. After he is reliable indoors, move him to a fenced area and continue. After and only after, he can come when confined by a fence or a leash should you attempt practicing without any controll except that of spoken words.

If he does not learn the come command, he may learn the touch command. Put a piece of kibble in-between your fingers and encourage him to touch his nose to your palm to get it when you say "Touch". Most dogs will start coming the moment you show your palm, regardless if you say "touch" or not.

You should also teach him the "leave it" command. Find something the dog is usually interested in, like a toy or a treat, and put it in front of them saying "leave it". If they go for the item, scold them and remove the item. If they don't reach for it, praise the dog.

Practice the command on walks. When they start to sniff something, say "leave it", and if they stop sniffing to look at you, praise them. If they don't, a simple "no" will usually work.

Eventually ((can take months)), they'll start listening to the "leave it" command to ignore other people and pets.

First of all, I would stop playing in an unsecured location at all untill you develop a more reliable recall. If you must use this lot get your dog a long line so you can still retain some control if he runs off.

One of the things we did with our dog to improve his recall was turning it into a game. My bf would stand on one end of a field while I would be on another and we would take turns making it a game of chase. So I would call him and turn and run away and once he caught me he would get praise and than my bf would call him and do the same. Doing this has allowed us to take him to a large forested dog exercise area and give him a chance to stretch his legs while we know we can still get him back.

Practice this in a fenced in yard. Keep small cut hot dogs in your pocket, call your dog and when he comes and sits by your feet give him a treat and say good boy! Throw the ball again and call him again repeat the process. Do a few reps and soon he should start getting it. Practice everyday until you feel comfortable he will come every time and move to a bigger yard with a little bit more distractions, do a few reps of the exercises and soon he will come every time you call him.

every time your dog comes and/or does good behaviour, reward him with a treat or a squeak toy, when he doesnt do what you ask, take the ball and walk away, he will learn that if he doesnt do whats asked then play time if over. but reward him every time he does the right thing

Work with him in the house first. Use treats and praise him when he comes when called.

Positive reinforcement. Tell him what a good boy he is when he listens. Patience. Persistence.
