Can you give me an example of overcoming evil with good?

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

    Greetings dear brother,

The best example that I know of is here, in the words of the Master:

"Do not resist the evil; but whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him also. And to him desiring to sue you, and to take your tunic, allow him also to have the coat. And whoever shall compel you to go one mile, go two with him. He asking you to give, and he wishing to borrow from you, do not turn away..." (Mat 5:38 LITV)

But as many as received him, to them gave he THE RIGHT to BECOME children of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12)

This is part of "counting the cost", for we are giving up our personal "rights" in order to receive Him and "the right to become the sons of God"

"Love your enemies; bless those cursing you, do well to those hating you; and pray for those abusing and persecuting you, so that YOU MAY BECOME sons of your Father in Heaven."

    (Mat 5:44-45)

He gives his cheek to Him who strikes him; he is filled with reproach.

    (Lam 3:30 LITV)

What is the Victory in being reproached, reviled by "the evil"?

If you are reviled in the name of Christ, you are blessed, because "the Spirit of God and of glory rests on you." Truly, according to them, He is blasphemed; but according to you, HE IS GLORIFIED."

    (1Pe 4:14 LITV)

"O YHWH, are not Your eyes for/ upon the truth?" (Jer 5:3 )

When someone loses a law suit, and ends up giving them MORE than what was demanded...that may appear to be a defeat...But the Victory is what is happening "in spirit and in truth"!

Concerning, "the etxra mile", this is very interesting:

"Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two." (Matthew 5:41, (NASB))"

"The verse is a reference to the practice of "impressment" which, among other things, allowed a Roman soldier to conscript a Jewish native to carry his equipment for one Roman mile-- no easy task considering a Roman soldier's backpack could weigh upwards of 100 pounds (45.4 kg). Jesus' point was that his followers must relinquish their individual "rights" in order to advance God's kingdom through self-sacrifice."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Extra_Mile_(disam...

The Apostle completely believed and desired to live and obey this instruction and "strategy" of Jesus, to "resist not evil"; this is why he could see the failure in retaliating in the flesh against those who have done people wrong... for they were actually disobeying the Lord and resisiting the evil. (All under the ":guise:" of course, of "standing up fo ones rights".

This is why he rebuked the Roman Christians by asking, "Why not instead be wronged? Why not instead be defrauded?"

"Indeed, then, there is already a failure with you all, that you have lawsuits with yourselves. Why not instead be wronged? Why not instead be defrauded?"

    (1Co 6:7 LITV)

Peter also, gives us another great example of overcoming evil with good, in His epistle:

Servants, be obedient to your masters in all fear, not only to those good and forbearing, but also to the perverse ones. For this is a grace, if because of conscience toward God anyone bears grief, suffering unjustly. For what glory is it if you patiently endure while sinning and being buffeted? But if you are suffering while doing good, and patiently endure, this is a grace from God. For YOU WERE CALLED TO THIS, for even Christ suffered on our behalf, leaving behind AN EXAMPLE FOR US, that you should follow His steps;" (1Pe 2:18-22 Literal trans.)

Even when they demanded that Jesus and His disciples pay "the didrachmas" which he was technically "free from", He payed it.

And they having come into Capernaum, those receiving the didrachmas came to Peter and said, Does your teacher not pay the didrachmas? He said, Yes. And when he entered into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive customs or tribute? From their sons or from strangers? Peter said to Him, From strangers. Jesus said to him, Then truly the sons are free. But that we may not offend them, going to the sea, throw in a hook and take the first fish coming up. And opening its mouth, you will find a stater. Taking that, give to them for you and Me.

    (Mat 17:24-27 LITV)

"They who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; they who would destroy me are mighty, my lying enemies; THEN I give back what I did not take away."

    (Psa 69:4 LITV)

To give back something that was never taken away, is like paying what is unjustly being demanded, and like giving your extra when someone it trying to exploit, extort and defraud you.

Why would we do these things and suffer wrongs and be defrauded, NOT resisting evil?

To bring Joy to our Perfect Father in Heaven...to stand up for our RIGHT as a son of God...THE RIGHT to BECOME the sons of God!

Source(s): With every wrong we suffer patiently, and every insult and curse that we bless in return, (etc.) we are becoming the sons of God, and it is only THE MEEK who shall inherit the earth....not those who go about to take advantage of others. "returning evil for evil TO NO ONE; providing right things before all men. Prov. 3:4 If possible, from you being in peace with all men; not avenging yourselves, beloved, but giving place to wrath, for it has been written, "Vengeance is Mine," "I will repay," says the Lord. Deut. 32:35 Then "if one hostile to you hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink; for doing this you will heap coals of fire on his head." Prov. 25:21, 22 Do not be overcome by evil, but OVERCOME THE EVIL WITH GOOD." (Rom 12:17-21 LITV)

For example, you are overwhelmed with guilt for arguing with someone you love right before they died. Instead of feeling guilt ridden and angry at yourself for the rest of your life (evil-ness), you make an extra special effort to visit his/her gravesite on their birthday every year with something they like, and mention them in prayer (good-ness).

Or you ate your roommate's food, and now they're upset after realizing. You can't give back the food you ate, so instead you replace it, and you're extra careful from then on to not use her/his things, and you will share your things with them when they need it!

You are overwhelming your feelings of evilness with a lesson learned, and overriding it with a newfound goodness.
