How do I get fruits and veg into kids who won't touch them?

My kids are picky...I admit, it's my fault! I eat better then they do...thy are in need of REAL food. They do not appear to be as healthy as they should be. How do I get a boy of 6 who turns his nose up at watermelon, and anything else that came from the ground, to start eating healthier? My other 2 will eat fruit, but not veg...I eat good, but my hubby, he's just as bad as the kids. Whatever he eats, they want. He will eat it in front of em' too. He won't listen to me when I ask him to help out w/ this issue. His attitude is he's worked all day, he's entitled, and he payed for it, he can eat when he wants! In one respect I understand, but this is our kid's health....and his too. The way he eats, I would be surprised if he didn't get kidney stones by 30. How do I introduce the good stuff into their diets in a way that's showing veggies in a good light? My son loves his burgers..and bread...and pizza, like his father. Uugh

Well, at least you have identified the source of the problem: Daddy. Obviously his mother did a lousy job teaching HIM to eat better. Who is buying the groceries in your house? As in, not who earns the money to pay for them, but who actually goes out and shops? If you want more control over what people are eating in your house, you will have to do ALL of the food shopping and really step up the sneaky cooking.

Obviously you can't just throw out all the chips and sodas and jam the carrot sticks down everyone's throats, but you would be amazed at how many fruits and vegetables you can incorporate into your family's meals if you work at it.

How about pumpkin or fruit pie? Blueberry muffins? You can put spaghetti sauce on a lot of things and make it more attractive to people who like pasta and pizza. Pizza can have veggies on it; try onions to start. You can put chopped onions and sweet peppers into your meat loaf. If your husband is the kind of guy who will pick the little identifiable vegetable bits out of everything, then get out your blender and puree them, then mix with your bread crumbs and whatever else you put in your meatloaf and meatball mix. Chili is also a good place for some vegetables, if you don't make them too obvious. So is salsa. Give the man some nachos.

You start easy with this stuff and work your way up. Don't make it into a battle. But the more decent food and less junk you bring into the house in the first place, the easier it will be, especially if you have lots of things sitting around that actually look pretty good to eat.

Don't offer him junk. Unless there's something wrong with him, he won't starve himself. Try different fruits and veg, and serve them in different ways. Don't sit there and "force" him to eat, but don't give him anything else- no burgers- no nothing, except the healthy food you want him to eat. Let him eat it whenever he decides he wants to. And keep offering different healthy options so he can try them. Don't make it into a battle. It doesn't have to be battle if the only thing he has to eat is what you want him to eat. Tell dad he can eat junk until he can't stand up... but AWAY from the kids.

It helps if you cook from scratch. You can incorporate things like white whole wheat (made from white wheat, not red, and tastes more like regular flour) and pureed veggies into a lot of meals.

Pumpkin is a very healthy vegetable that can be used in pies, cakes and breads. I also made banana and zuchini bread. Cheese makes most vegetables tasty.

I grew a lot of our vegetables and fruit, and fruit tastes SO much better when it ripens on the tree. My kids loved to pick fruit off our trees. I would freeze nectarine slices and they would eat them like popsicles. My kids would eat certain vegetables raw when they would not eat them cooked, and they enjoyed picking them. My daughter would eat vine ripened tomatoes like they were apples.

He loves pizza, so maybe try making a home made pizza. Wholemeal pita bread topped with veges like mushrooms, capsicum etc - and then put low fat mozarella on top of it all. He will eat his veges, and not even know it!

Make food like bolognaise, and grate carrots and zucchini etc into it.

I know this isn't really showing veges in a 'good' light - but it will show him that veges can taste great! You can build on it from there.

Perhaps try vege sticks with low fat dips/hummus etc.

Instead of hot chips - bake some sweet potato ones.

Maybe he will enjoy eating fruit if you make it more interesting. Such as fruit kebabs. I made those at my daughters birthday party, I put grapes, banana, watermelon and mandarins onto skewers - and every single kid had one and loved it!

Smoothies! you can add a lot of fruits and a little low fat ice cream. when the kids are not looking you can add spinach in it and it does not change the taste at all!

you can try substitute ideas my mom would switch white rice, bread, tortillas, for whole grain. When i was little I only ate what my dad liked, even if I hated it. You could ask your husband to eat the healthy food in front of the kids at dinner, maybe they will pick up on it.

    Garden.

We grow a lot of our veggies & my kids love them. I'm the picky one. lol But I've read kids are more likely to eat food they help prepare &/or grow.
